7 Heaviest Defeats Of Manchester United Under Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag is under huge pressure over Manchester United’s persistent poor show. He was brought to Old Trafford to change the fortune of the Red Devils, however, things have only gone worse ever since the arrival of the Dutchman. 

There is a growing couldron demanding the sacking of ten Hag as Manchester United’s manager amid his deplorable run. On that note, let us have a look at some of the most disastrous performances of Manchester United under Erik ten Hag. 

1. Liverpool 7-0 Man Utd – May 5, 2023 

Entering the game from winning the Carabao Cup and beating Barcelona, United fans were optimistic of a first win at Anfield since 2016. On the contrary, the Red Devils faced its worst loss. 

United made a strong start to the game but everything changed when Cody Gakpo appeared just before half-time. After the interval, they simply fell apart. Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah all scored twice, while Roberto Firmino completed the rout, sealing United’s heaviest defeat since 1931, and their joint-worst result of all time.

2. Crystal Palace 4-0 Man Utd – May 6, 2024 

United travelled to south London with a beleaguered squad.  The substitutes’ bench comprised five unproven teenagers and two goalkeepers while the back four featured a right-back playing at left-back and a 14th different centre-back pairing of the season – one of whom was a midfielder and the other a 36-year-old who had spent last summer training with the youth team. 

United committed basic errors in their worst display of the campaign and their second worst under ten Hag. The Red Devils were all over the place throughout the game.  With the defeat,  United set an unwanted record of 13 Premier League defeats in one campaign. 

3. Brentford 4-0 Man Utd – August 13, 2022 

Ten Hag’s was welcomed at United  with an opening-day defeat at home to Brighton. David de Gea let a tame shot from Josh Dasilva slip through his fingers for the opening goal and then gifted the second to Mathias Jensen as he tried to play out from his own area. Ben Mee and Bryan Mbuemo then scored in quick succession to give Brentford an unbelievable 4-0 lead after only 35 minutes.  

The defeat meant it was the first time United had lost their two opening games of the season in 30 years. It was one of the club’s worst away performances in the Premier League, against a team that had spent most of their history in the lower leagues.

4. Sevilla 3-0 Man Utd – April 20, 2023 

United had been unbeaten in their three visits to Spain in 2022-23,  but they fell victim to Sevilla in the quarter-final (second leg) of the Europa League. Goalkeeper David de Gea gave one of his worst performances for United. It was simply not his day at the goalpost as Sevilla scorers got three past him. 

5. Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth – January 3, 2023 

Manchester United were crushed by Bournemouth, who had never previously won at Old Trafford.  The Red Devils got off to the wrong footing right from the start in a game dominated by Bournemouth. Dominic Solanke gave the visitors an early lead before Philip Billing and Marcos Senesi scored headers in the second half. Fans at the stadium had already started leaving on United. 

6. Man Utd 0-3 Tottenham – September 29, 2024 

Tottenham took less than three minutes to take the lead. This set the tone for the entire match in which United looked lackluster and Tottenham emitted a desire to dominate. While Micky van der Ven gave Spurs the early lead, they scored twice in the second-half.

7. Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool – September 2, 2024 

Liverpool carried forward its dominant form from the previous season as the 2024-25 season began. The Reds had been unbeaten against Manchester United during the 2023-24 season. 

While Casemiro spoiled the game for United after making two errors in the first 45 minutes, the entire team was hardly in their element to display a decent performance. Ten Hag looked clueless, thus  becoming a target of criticism from supporters.
