The Cincinnati Open, also known as the Cincinnati Masters, is a professional tennis championship held annually in Cincinnati, United States. Inaugurated on September 18, 1899, the Cincinnati Open is the oldest tennis event in the United States which is still played in its original city. It is one of the ATP Masters 1000 tournaments on the ATP Tour, and one of the WTA 1000 tournaments on the WTA Tour.

Tennis legend Roger Federer has the most Cincinnati Open title wins at seven and bagged five of them while being at No.1. He was also the last player to win the title while at the numero uno position until Jannik Sinner achieved the feat at the 2024 edition.

Jannik Sinner- 2024

Jannik Sinner scaled the pinnacle of the ATP Rankings on June 10, 2024 and has maintained his position since then. The Italian won the 2024 Australian Open, his only Grand Slam so far. The 23-year-old beat Frances Tiafoe 7-6(4) 6-2 at the final to clinch his first Cincinnati Open victory. It was the fifth title win of the year for the World No.1.

Roger Federer – 2005, 2007, 2009, 2012

 

Roger Federer was at No 1 from February 2, 2004 until August 17, 2008. The Swiss won the American title in 2005 defeating Andy Roddick, in 2007 beating James Blake in the final.

The Swiss was back at No 1 from July 6, 2009 until June 6, 2010 and he collected his third trophy in 2009 after getting the better of Novak Djokovic in the final. He returned to the top again in July 2012, and won the title that year once again with a victory over Djokovic.

Gustavo Kuerton – 2001

Brazilian tennis great Gustavo Kuerten won the 2001 edition of the Cincinnati Open in the phase when he was No.1 from April 23 until November 18. It was one of his six wins at the hard court. He has won three Grand Slam titles, all French Open.

Pete Sampras – 1997 and 1999

American giant Pete Sampras was at the top of the rankings from April 15, 1996 until March 29, 1998. He won his second Cincinnati Open title in August 1997 with a two-set win over Thomas Muster. He also won the 1999 edition when he was No.1 by defeating Patrick Rafter in the final.  

Andre Agassi – 1995

Andre Agassi won two Cincinnati titles in men’s singles. He won his maiden trophy in 1995 when he was at No.1 in ATP rankings by beating Chang in the final. Agassi became No 1 for the first time on April 10, 1995 and he stayed there until November 5.

John McEnroe – 1981

John McEnroe defeated Chris Lewis 6–3, 6–4 in the final to become the first world No 1 to win the title. McEnroe was in his fourth stint at No 1 when he clinched the title on August 3, 1981.
