The Billie Jean King Cup was launched as the Federation Cup in 1963 to mark the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). It was renamed the Fed Cup in 1995 and, in September 2020, took on the name Billie Jean King Cup in honour of former World No. 1 Billie Jean King.
The Billie Jean King Cup is the world’s largest annual women’s international team sports competition in terms of the number of nations that compete. Initially it featured only a handful of countries, but now has grown into a global competition with more than 100 nations participating.
Billie Jean King Cup: Format
The format of the Billie Jean King Cup is similar to that of the men’s Davis Cup, with teams competing in a series of singles and doubles matches based on world group and regional zones. Nations are divided into different groups based on rankings and compete in a series of ties, or matches, to advance through the rounds.
Throughout the season, teams engage in ties – best-of-three matches consisting of singles and doubles. The Billie Jean King Cup then advances to the final round where the top teams play for the championship title.
The players of each team are led by a captain who could be a former player, renowned coach or a celebrated representative of the sport.
In the first few decades of the event, the United States emerged as the most successful team, winning multiple titles. USA was the first nation to win more than 10 Billie Jean King Cup titles.
Australia, too, had a successful run in the early years of the tournament, often posing tough competition to the United States for dominance. With top-notch players like Evonne Goolagong Cawley and Margaret Court, Australia became one of the most formidable teams in the event with multiple titles in the 1960s and 1970s.
