BPL: Currently, foreign players of the Rajshahi franchise are held up in Dhaka and are unable to return to their countries due to unresolved payment issues. The franchise failed to pay at the right time, and now the players do not know anything about their departure. There was no contact from the owners or management of the team, and they have been kept in a hotel, waiting for news about flights back home.
Foreign Players Left Waiting for Payment from BPL

The foreign players of Rajshahi are in great financial trouble since the franchise didn’t pay the due amount to them. Since the team was knocked out from the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) after losing against the Khulna Tigers, all the foreign players, such as Mohammad Haris from Pakistan, Aftab Alam from Afghanistan, Mark Deyal from West Indies, Ryan Burl from Zimbabwe, and Miguel Cummins from West Indies, have been left alone in Dhaka with no reply.
Some players have already been given 25% of the payment they deserved; others still have not been paid. In addition, foreign players have not seen their daily allowances for the last 11 days, which is a great source of frustration for them. They tried to call the management so many times with no response on payments and their flights.
Failure of Rajshahi Franchise in BPL
Rajshahi franchise is facing financial crises. Rajshahi has faced financial problems throughout the BPL season. Even before the tournament, local players like Anamul Haque did not receive their payments, leading to a boycott of a training session in Chittagong. Foreigners also joined the protest, initially refusing to take part in a match due to the same reasons.
Eventually, players like Ryan Burl and Mohammad Haris agreed to continue playing and helped the team push for a playoff spot. They could not, however, do enough to see Rajshahi qualify on net run rate, and their financial problems remained unsolved.
BPL Governing Council Admits Lack of Proper Oversight

The Bangladesh Premier League’s governing council has admitted it was a failure in its due diligence when it allowed the Rajshahi franchise to participate in the BPL tournament without ascertaining its financial stability. The member secretary of the Bangladesh Premier League governing council, Nazmul Abedin Fahim, said that the BCB neither scrutinized nor assessed the franchise’s financial health or performance record.
Fahim said, “I think we didn’t evaluate the franchisees properly. I feel that we did not verify their experience and financial strength.” He expressed regret over the current situation, noting that the BPL’s failure to properly vet Rajshahi has created significant problems not only for the stranded foreign players but also for the tournament’s reputation.
The Need for Financial Security in BPL Franchises

Rajshahi’s financial instability serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough background checks and financial assessments before granting franchises the right to participate in major leagues like the BPL. Financial health is a crucial factor for any franchise in ensuring that players are paid on time and that the operations of the team run smoothly.
It puts the risks in place, showing that improper vetting of franchises has the risk of impacting not only the players but the whole credibility of the tournament. In this situation, where no one knows what to do and there are still stranded players, scrutiny of BPL’s due diligence process has become an even more serious concern.
Call for Change: Assuring Stability in the Future for BPL
It must serve as an eye-opener for BPL as well as for the other future franchise teams in this respect. The governing council of the BCB and the BCB themselves should always cross-check a team’s financials before providing it with an opportunity to take part in the tournament. Then there would be no such embarrassing situations as currently where players remain stuck and worried and the monetary imbalance would not degrade the glory of the league.
As the BPL continues, stronger financial structures and safeguards must be set up by the board to ensure such issues never again arise in the future. Success for this league depends as much on players’ performance as it does on the integrity and financial reliability of its franchises.
