Sunrisers Hyderabad lost five of their six matches played this season under David Warner. After comments from Warner that he doesn’t have any role in team selection, things escalated fast from thereon. David Warner’s form also isn’t helping his cause (6 innings, 193 runs), which resulted in him being dropped from the team.

Over the years, Warner has been a solid performer for SRH consistently. He along with Jonny Bairstow proved to be one of the best opening partners in recent years.

Here is a deep dive down the memory lane on David Warner’s IPL career.

Teams played for :

  1. Delhi
Warner was with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for 2009-2013. 2009 edition played in South Africa, Warner had a decent season with 163 runs in seven innings. The highest score being 51. Overall for Delhi, Warner scored 1435 runs in 55 innings. Highest being 109*.  With two centuries and ten fifties. It was these years where Warner played with Virender Sehwag and got some tips from him on how he can score a triple test century.
  2. Hyderabad
From 2014 till present (except for 2018) Warner has been a vital cog in SRH’s wheel. Scored 4,012 runs for Hyderabad in 93 innings, the highest score being 126 in 2017. 2016 was the most successful year as a batsman for Warner scoring whopping 848 runs with nine half-centuries. The same year he leads SRH to their maiden IPL title.

SRH Captaincy
To give a glance at how important Warner is for SRH, we need to look at his crucial batting contributions over the years.

69 off 38 vs RCB in Final at Bengaluru – 2016
93* off 58 vs Gujarat Lions in Qualifier 2 at Delhi – 2016
126 off 59 vs KKR at Hyderabad – 2017
90 off 45 vs CSK at Ranchi – 2014

These knocks in tough situations, prove Warner led from the front and is a player for big occasions.

Warner took just 135 innings to score 5000 runs in IPL which is the best followed by AB de Villiers, 161 innings. Only these two overseas players have crossed the 5000 run mark in IPL.
From 2014-2020 Warner has consistently scored over 500 runs each year. Thus single-handedly taking SRH over the finish line.

Warner led SRH from 2015-17 and 2020 – 2021 (six matches) for 69 matches. Winning 35 of them, Losing 32, Tied 2. Winning percentage of 52.17. Under Warner, 2016 was the most successful year for SRH winning their maiden IPL title and reaching the playoffs thrice.

2021
Warner was replaced as a captain and losing his place in starting eleven (6 innings, 193 runs), there is a lot of backlash from fans against SRH. Calling it unfair and disrespectful, social media erupted in support of Warner. Dale Steyn said this might be the last time we see David Warner at SRH.
