Yuzvendra Chahal Shines Bright in County Cricket with Career-Best Spell: Left out of the Indian cricket team, Yuzvendra Chahal is making the most of his time in county cricket. The veteran spinner delivered a career-best performance for Northamptonshire, grabbing six wickets in a brilliant spell against Derbyshire in the County Championship Division Two.
Yuzvendra Chahal’s Turnaround After a Quiet Debut Match
Yuzvendra Chahal ended with impressive figures of 6/118 from 33.2 overs. Derbyshire had a solid start, but Chahal broke their rhythm by dismissing both Harry Came and Luis Reece in quick succession. He struck again in the very next over and kept the pressure on throughout. Just when Derbyshire looked like they might bounce back, Chahal returned to wrap up the tail, sending Zak Chappell, Ben Aitchison, and Blair Tickner back to the pavilion.
In his previous match against Kent, Chahal went wicketless in the first innings but bounced back with four wickets in the second, helping his team draw the game.
The 34-year-old leg-spinner is signed with Northamptonshire until the end of the 2025 season and will also feature in their ODI Cup campaigns.
England Win Toss, Opt to Bowl in Series-Deciding Final Test
Meanwhile, in the fifth and final Test match at The Oval, England’s stand-in captain Ollie Pope won the toss and chose to bowl first.
“There’s a bit more grass in the wicket this week, overcast conditions, it’s a no-brainer to bowl first,” Pope said.
He stepped in as captain for Ben Stokes, who is missing due to a sore shoulder. Jacob Bethell replaced Stokes in the playing XI, while Jamie Overton, Gus Atkinson, and Josh Tongue came in for Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, and Liam Dawson.
India made four changes too, bringing in Karun Nair, Dhruv Jurel, Akash Deep, and Prasidh Krishna. They replaced Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, and Anshul Kamboj.
Indian captain Shubman Gill was once again unlucky at the toss, losing it for the fifth time in a row this series – making it 15 straight international games where India hasn’t won the toss.
“As long as we are winning the match I don’t mind losing the toss,” Gill said. “The wicket looks good so post runs in the first innings and take it from there.”
England currently leads the series 2-1.
