ESS vs HAM: In an excellent game in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup between ESS and HAM, Joe Weatherley showed great depth by accelerating the second part of his innings, scoring 116 not out and leading Hampshire* to an easy chase of 286 against Essex at the Utilita Bowl.

This was Weatherley’s third List A century and his first in two years, helping Hampshire notch up two wins from two, while Essex remain winless.

Essex Set a Target of 285 After Middle-Order Collapse

After being asked to bat first, Essex had a promising start with a 99-run partnership between Robin Das and Tom Westley, both scoring at better than a run a ball. But Hampshire’s bowlers, led by Kyle Abbott and Andrew Neal, triggered a collapse in the middle overs.

Robin Das and Tom Westley both registered half-centuries but fell in quick succession. Tilak Varma impressed with a sharp catch to dismiss Westley at short fine leg. Wickets kept falling as Benkenstein, Thain, and Browne all failed to convert starts.

At one stage, Essex were 189/6 in the 35th over, but Charlie Allison (80) and Simon Fernandes (41) steadied the ship. Allison, fresh off three hundreds in the Rothesay County Championship, continued his strong form, but both batters fell trying to accelerate, leading to Essex being bowled out for 285.

Hampshire’s Measured Chase Anchored by Weatherley and Tilak Varma

Chasing under a run-a-ball, Hampshire batted with precision. Ali Orr and Nick Gubbins negotiated the early threat before falling for 20 and 40 respectively. The momentum was then seized by the pairing of Weatherley and Tilak Varma, who put on a vital 98-run partnership.

Tilak Varma, featuring after strong performances in The Hundred, played a measured innings, showcasing elegant ground shots and even a sensational reverse-hit six.

He went to his fifty before falling to Westley as he ran down the track. Tom Prest was out shortly afterwards, handing Westley his third wicket (3/39).

Weatherley’s Century Hands Side Victory in Style

Joe Weathery, already impressing in the Vitality Blast and Championship, remained composed and classy during the run chase. He:

Scored his century with a beautiful straight drive to the boundary. Formed a crucial 47-run stand with Ben Mayes, then added quick runs with Felix Organ. Finished the match with a six, taking Hampshire to a comfortable win with overs to spare.
