PAK vs AFG: Pakistan kick-started their tri-series campaign in Sharjah with a commanding 39-run win over Afghanistan, thanks to a level-headed unbeaten half-century from Skipper Salman Agha and a blazing four-wicket performance by Haris Rauf that included a match-turning double-wicket maiden.
Salman Agha Pillars Pakistan’s Innings with Unbeaten 53
In the game between PAK and AFG, Pakistan chose to bat first and utilized a Sharjah surface that was good value for hitting to its fullest potential. Though Afghanistan’s spinners attempted to derail things in the middle phase, Salman Agha kept the momentum in the hands of his team.
Having faced one of the world’s best T20 bowlers in Rashid Khan, Salman responded with two consecutive sixes in a show of intent, going on to remain not out on 53 off 36 deliveries. His aggressive partnership, abetted by a late-order flourish from the lower order, assisted Pakistan in reaching a competitive score.
Farhan’s Early Assault Sets the Tone
Pakistan made a bouncy start courtesy Sahibzada Farhan, who drove an attacking innings against Afghanistan’s new-ball attack. He hit 21 from 10 balls alone, with a towering six and an angry drive straight back over the bowler’s head.
Though Farhan departed prematurely, his powerplay rampage provided Pakistan with a solid foundation. Their middle order did falter somewhat against pressure from Afghanistan’s spinners, but the foundation ensured they did not get too behind the run rate.
Pakistan Finish Strong with Contributions from the Lower Order
Middle and lower order were instrumental in the final dash. The combination of Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Haris, and Faheem Ashraf added 50 runs in 29 balls, taking Pakistan to an intimidating finish. Pakistan made 99 runs in the last 9 overs, demonstrating their depth and attacking mindset.
Haris Rauf’s Double-Wicket Maiden Turns the Game
Afghanistan’s pursuit was nicely laid out initially, hitting 93 for 2 by the 11th over. The tone had been set by Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the powerplay, and a decent stand between Sediqullah Atal and Darwish Rasooli kept the requisite rate in sight.
But the game took a dramatic turn in the 12th over, when Haris Rauf produced a gem of a double-wicket maiden, dismissing Atal and Karim Janat in successive overs. With express pace, Rauf’s hard-length balls without respite utterly shattered Afghanistan’s flow.
Afghanistan Collapse: 5 Wickets for 4 Runs in 16 Balls
Then came a staggering collapse. Sufiyan Muqeem and Mohammad Nawaz took advantage of the pressure, clattering through the wickets. Between the 12th and 16th overs, Afghanistan lost 5 wickets for just 6 runs in the space of 24 balls.
The 3rd innings of the match was a great end to the game with Afghanistan needing to stage quite the comeback. Only Rashid Khan put up a fight with a quick fire 39 off 16 balls but the match was firmly out of reach for him by that stage anyway. It was a nice cameo but in the end merely an afterthought of a lost cause.
Clinical Pakistan Impress with Bat and Ball
The PAK vs AFG game showed Pakistan’s strong game plan in action: start aggressively, bat deep and apply relentless pressure with the ball. Despite some patchy moments particularly against Afghanistan’s spinners, Pakistan adjusted well and executed their plans well.
