New Zealand booked their spot in the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup courtesy of a thumping win against South Africa in the first final, led by Finn Allen’s record-breaking century, the fastest by any batter in the history of the tournament.
The Chase
Chasing 170 runs to win in their quota of 20 overs, New Zealand got off to a rollicking start with the opening pair of Finn Allen and Tim Seifert adding 117 runs for the first wicket, thereby making things easy for the incoming batters, who got the job done with nine wickets in hand.
The Start
New Zealand’s comfortable win over an in-form South African team, which was unbeaten in the ongoing tournament, leading into the semifinal, was set up by the team’s bowler, who kept on pucking wickets at regular intervals and did not allow the opposition batters to get going.
The Middle Phase
Similar were the conditions in the middle phase of the South African batting innings before the pair of Marco Jansen and Tristan Stubbs added vital runs for thesixth wicket to take the team to a challenging total of 169 runs at the end of the first half.
The Chase
However, the total did not prove to be enough as the Kiwis got over the line in a convincing fashion to book a date with either England or India in the final scheduled to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (March 8). Mitchell Santner will now have to wait for the result of the second semi-final to know who its opponent will be.

The Performance
There is no denying thefact that New Zealand have been the most consistent team in thehistory of ICC tournaments, having made it to the knockout stage on most of the occasions
The Titles
However, despite making it to the knockouts on a number of occasions, the Blackcaps haven’t crossed the lineeven half the number of times, with their first ICC title coming after the win against India in the final of the Champions Trophy in the year 2000 (Knockout Trophy as the tournament was known back then).
The Wait
New Zealand then had to wait for 21 years to win their next ICC event, which came in the form of the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021. Coincidently that game was also played with India as the opponent.
