Former England and current Delhi Capitals mentor Kevin Pietersen has decided to resign from his position just two weeks prior to the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. Pietersen had taken over the role in the team prior to the 2025 season and had worked with several young players in the team.

Pietersen’s stint as the mentor of the Delhi Capitals team, however, has come to an end as he announced that he would not be able to give enough time to the role in the upcoming season.

Kevin Pietersen Explains Reason for Exit

Taking to his microblogging account on the social media platform X (Twitter), Kevin Pietersen revealed that his decision to step down was due to his inability to commit the necessary time required to carry out his responsibilities as a mentor during the tough IPL schedule.

In his tweet, Pietersen wished the team well for the upcoming season and also revealed that he will still be part of the IPL this year as a commentator.

“I cannot be a mentor for Delhi Capitals in this IPL season. I cannot commit to the time that the job requires. Best wishes to all the players for this season! However, I’ll see you back in the commentary box! IPL is the world’s best league, and I can’t wait to see all of you soon,” Pietersen wrote.

Impact of Kevin Pietersen’s Mentorship at Delhi Capitals

During his brief tenure, Kevin Pietersen worked extensively with the younger players of the Delhi Capitals squad. Among the players, Ashutosh Sharma seemed to have benefitted the most from his guidance, as the player himself praised Pietersen for his contribution to his improvement as a player at the highest level of the game.  Kevin Pietersen’s experience as a former international captain proved to be valuable to the dressing room.

Previous Criticism Over Mid-Season Break

Similarly, Kevin Pietersen had also faced criticism from fans after taking a week-long holiday to the Maldives, which came at a time when the tournament was only three matches old.

However, upon returning to the team’s environment, KL Rahul, the wicketkeeper-batter of the Delhi Capitals, jokingly teased Kevin Pietersen regarding the holiday. There is a possibility that Kevin Pietersen might have wanted the same during the 2026 season.

Will Delhi Capitals Appoint a New Mentor?

With Kevin Pietersen leaving the team, Delhi Capitals are now entering the IPL 2026 season without a mentor. The team is now in a dilemma whether they should get a new mentor or not.

Interestingly, the Lucknow Super Giants are also not having a mentor as of now. The team had mentors such as Gautam Gambhir and Zaheer Khan in the past, but they left the team last year.

The season is approaching quickly, and Delhi Capitals may look towards the existing coaches in the team.

Kevin Pietersen to Continue IPL Presence as Commentator

Although Kevin Pietersen will not be a part of the Delhi Capitals’ support staff for the current season, fans will still get to see him during the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League as he takes up the commentary box once again. Kevin Pietersen, the former international star, continues to remain a sought-after voice for the Indian Premier League matches.
