After Roy, Buttler set to leave England cricket?

Rajasthan Royals are planning to offer a full-time contract to Jos Buttler. Roy has signed a similar contract with the Knight Riders franchise.

The rise of T20 Cricket has seen players getting highly lucrative contracts worth millions. The dominance of teams from the Indian Premier League (IPL) is evident. IPL franchises have spread their wings significantly. IPL franchises own teams in ILT20, Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Major League Cricket (MLC) and SA20. Ever since entering leagues in different countries, IPL franchises are trying to sign players for a full-time contract that allows them to play for their franchises in every league. This full-time contract will have the players leaving their national cricket teams. In this article, we will look at if Jos Buttler like his national teammate Jason Roy is set to leave England cricket.

Jos Buttler to leave England cricket?

Jos Buttler is in the contracted players list shared England Cricket Board (ECB) in October 2022. Buttler currently plays Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. The Royals reportedly are planning to offer the star English batter a four-year contract. This deal would mean that Buttler who currently plays for Royals in IPL and Paarl Royals in SA20 will also play Barbados Royals in CPL. The Royals currently have franchises in three leagues but with the rate of expansion of T20 leagues in the world, the number of franchises from Royals could rise. Someone like Jos Buttler will be an automatic pick in any T20 side. The reports suggest that the offer to Buttler is worth nearly INR 40 crores over 4 years.

What does this mean for England cricket?

By signing this deal Buttler will have to give up his England contract. Buttler is a significant player for England cricket in both the white ball formats. England has already lost opener, Jason Roy, to such a deal. Roy was not contracted by ECB and thus signed a similar contract with the Knight Riders franchise. Roy is in Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL and would be seen playing for the LA Knight Riders in MLC.

With two white ball tournaments in 2023 and 2024, someone like Buttler is essential for England’s success. England won the 2019 ODI Cricket World Cup and also won the 2022 T20 World Cup.
