Babar Azam Steps Down From Pakistan Cricket Team White-Ball Captaincy
Pakistan cricket captain Babar Azam announces his resignation from the white-ball captaincy to concentrate on his batting performance and personal growth after a challenging period for the team.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam faced criticism from fans after he announced he was stepping down as the white-ball captain of the team. Babar Azam said he made this decision to focus on improving his performance after a tough time as Pakistan’s white-ball captain.
Babar Azam Resigns: A Decision for Personal Growth
It has to be noted that Babar had first stepped down as captain in all formats after the team’s poor showing at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, where they didn’t make it to the semifinals. Later, he was given back the white-ball captaincy after changes in the PCB leadership.
Babar Azam announced the big decision via his official Twitter account on October 2nd. He took to his social media and penned a heartfelt note for his fans announcing his decision to retire as captain from the white-ball format. He wrote:
“Dear Fans, I’m sharing some news with you today. I have decided to resign as captain of the Pakistan men’s cricket team, effective as of my notification to the PCB and Team Management last month. It’s been an honour to lead this team, but it’s time for me to step down and focus on my playing role. Captaincy has been a rewarding experience, but it’s added a significant workload.”
He added: “I want to prioritize my performance, enjoy my batting, and spend quality time with my family, which brings me joy. By stepping down, I will gain clarity moving forward and focus more energy on my game and personal growth. I’m grateful for your unwavering support and belief in me. Your enthusiasm has meant the world to me. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together and excited to continue contributing to the team as a player. Thank you for your love and support.”

Babar Azam began his second term as captain with a 2-2 draw in a T20I series against a weak New Zealand team at home. The lowest point was a shocking loss to the USA in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Pakistan then lost to India and did not make it to the Super 8 stage.
Babar faced a lot of criticism for Pakistan’s poor performances in the Caribbean and the USA, but the Pakistan Cricket Board didn’t make any immediate changes to the team. Mohammad Rizwan and Shadab Khan were mentioned as possible new captains for the white-ball team.
After Babar Azam stepped down from the captaincy, wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan has become a strong candidate to lead the white-ball team. The PCB has even begun talks with Rizwan about team selection.
PCB’s Response to Babar Azam’s Resignation
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has accepted Babar Azam’s resignation as the men’s white-ball captain on Tuesday evening. Confirming the news of the same, PCB announced:
“Although the PCB had backed Babar Azam as the white-ball captain, his decision to step down reflects his desire to focus more on making a greater impact as a player.”
“This decision is a testament to his professionalism and commitment to Pakistan cricket. He believes that dedicating himself fully to his batting will enable him to play a more decisive role in the team’s success in the shorter formats.”
“The PCB acknowledges Babar’s contributions as white-ball captain, his ability to prioritise the team’s needs and his unwavering dedication to Pakistan cricket. The PCB will continue to support Babar Azam, recognising he still has much to offer both as a world-class batter and a senior statesman of the team.”
