Bosphorus Boxing Tournament: A strong punch from Nikhat Zareen to the last World Champion helped her in reaching the quarter-finals
Apart from Zareen, the 2013 Asia champions Shiva Thapa, Sonia Lather and Parveen also made it to the quarterfinals, winning their respective matches.
India’s boxer Nikhat Zareen beat defending world champion Paltseva Ekaterina of Russia in the ongoing Bosphorus Boxing tournament here to advance to the quarterfinals of the women’s 51kg category. Asian Championship bronze medalist Zareen defeated Ekaterina 5–0 on the second day of the tournament. Darren will face two-time World Champion Kazakhstan’s Kaizaybe Nazim in the next round.
Apart from Zareen, the 2013 Asia champions Shiva Thapa, Sonia Lather, and Parveen also made it to the quarterfinals, winning their respective matches. Shiva defeated Samagulov Baghtiyov of Kazakhstan 3–2 in the men’s 63kg.
In the second round of the women’s category, World Championship silver medalists Sonia (57 kg) and Parveen (60 kg) defeated Surmenelli Tugkenaz and Ojiol Acera respectively 5–0. Meanwhile, other Indian boxers Duryodhana Negi (69 kg), Brijesh Yadav (81 kg), and Kishan Sharma (plus 91 kg) lost in the opening matches.
On the third day of the tournament, Sonia, Zareen, Parveen, and Jyoti (69 kg) will compete in the women’s category of the quarter-finals, while Shiva and Gaurav Solanki will present their challenge in the men’s section.
