Somerset County Cricket Club has announced the appointment of Erin Osborne as the new head coach of the Somerset Women’s team. The 36-year-old former Australia allrounder will be at the helm on a three-year contract, taking over from Trevor Griffin, who stepped down after the team’s maiden season in the newly formed professional Tier 1 structure.
Erin Osborne’s Playing and Coaching Background
Between the years 2009 and 2016, Erin Osborne competed in an international martial arts career and represented Australia in 121 matches over 3 different styles. After retiring from professional domestic cricket in 2022, she became involved in coaching in the role of head coach for the ACT Meteors in Canberra and was able to gain a strong reputation as a result of this role and her other careers.
The combination of Erin’s diverse coaching background and her leadership abilities makes her an excellent candidate as Somerset enters into the next phase of its development.
Erin’s Reaction to the Position
In many ways, Erin is looking forward to the opportunity.
“I’m very happy to be accepted to Somerset as the head coach for the Women’s Team. This is an amazing chance for me to be part of a Club with rich history and tremendous support from its fans. I am excited to take the existing strong foundation and continue to grow and evolve with the players, coaches and staff to create future success”.
Recent Performances of Somerset Women
Somerset Women finished bottom of their group in this season’s Vitality Blast, but fared slightly better in the One-Day Cup, coming away with six wins from 14 and only just missing out on qualifying for the knockout stages. The appointment of Erin Osborne should drive improvement and consistency across all formats.
Club Leadership Commends Osborne’s Qualifications
Erin Osborne has been appointed by Somerset’s Cricket Director Andy Hurry because Hurry feels that Osborne was by far and away the best applicant after being interviewed in detail and being evaluated. She has a remarkable depth of knowledge, competitive nature and ability to encourage and motivate players.
Hurry said Osborne’s experience in building effective performance programs through both the women’s and men’s pathways will be important as Somerset continues to strengthen its professional women’s set-up at the Cooper Associates County Ground.
He also praised her growing reputation within Australian coaching circles and expressed confidence in her ability to elevate Somerset Women into a new era of progress.
