Matthew “FormaL” Piper, who distinguished himself by regaining his form in the Halo Championship Series, was named the Esports Controller Player of the Year (HCS). He came out of retirement to help OpTic win the 2022 Halo World Championship by switching from creator to player.
The Esports Awards are a night to honour the top performers in the fantastic Esports sector. There are several awards given out throughout the evening, including those for Controller Player of the Year and Controller Rookie of the Year. Players from a variety of gaming backgrounds were represented in both categories. But in each category, only one winner will be announced. As a result, Enzo “Seikoo” Grondein won the award for Esports Controller Rookie of the Year, while Matthew “FormaL” Piper won for Esports Controller Player of the Year.

The Controller player of the year category, on the other hand, is a different award. Compared to the Rookie division, this category is even more competitive. For OpTic Gaming, FormaL has a history of playing Call of Duty professionally. The 27-year-old began playing the new first-person shooter after the release of Halo Infinite. OpTic dominated the Halo circuit, taking first place in nearly every competition they participated in. They won the Halo World Championship, ending their season with a 5-4 victory over Cloud9, and took home half of the $400,000 prize money.
