EURO 2024: Kylian Mbappe Breaks Nose In France’s Win Against Austria

France captain and superstar player Kylian Mbappe suffered a nasty nose injury during the Euro 2024 match between France and Austria in Duesseldorf on Monday, June 17th.

The Les Bleus defeated Austria by 1-0 during the game, however, France’s win in their Euro 2024 opener was marred by a nasty injury on his nose. The incident took place after defender Maximilian W¶ber headed a cross from the new recruit of Real Madrid into his net in the first half of the game.

It was a bittersweet evening for France. While they managed to win the game, however, their captain had to leave for the hospital in an ambulance after the match, reportedly. Kylian left the pitch in the 90th minute as blood poured from his nose.

Notably, the game had initially resumed after the accidental collision, but soon Austria goalkeeper Patrick Pentz signaled to the referee that Mbappe needed medical attention. Mbappe was treated by the France medical team before he left for the hospital with his white shirt covered in blood. Mbappe was then replaced by veteran attacker Olivier Giroud.

As per reports in French media, Kylian Mbappe has a ‘suspected broken nose’, due to which he might miss a couple of games for the former world champions.

Now the president of the French Federation (FFF), Philippe Diallo, has given an official update on Mbappe’s injury, saying that he would not require an operation. The official statement also confirmed the extent of the injury, revealing that the star striker had undergone tests at a hospital before rejoining the France squad. He said:

A mask will be made which will allow (Mbappe) to contemplate a return to action after a period of treatment.”

It is still not clear whether Mbappe take part in France’s next game, against the Netherlands in Leipzig on Friday. Even France’s coach Didier Deschamps was also not optimistic when he spoke to reporters after Monday’s game. He revealed:

“He is in a bad way. He is not well. His nose is a mess, that’s for sure. That is the black mark of the evening for us.”

He added: “It is not a little scratch. I know he is always being talked about but I can’t say more.”

“I have always said that the France team will be stronger with Kylian in it.”
