Euro 2024: Romania wins the Euro 2024 opener 3-0 against Ukraine

Romania performed brilliantly against Ukraine in the Euro Cup 2024 and registered a historic win. In the match played on Monday, Romania defeated Ukraine 3-0 in a one-sided manner. This is Romania’s first win in 24 years and second overall in this tournament. In this way, the team gave a great birthday gift to coach Edward Iordănescu.

Euro 2024: Nicolae Stanciu took the early lead

Nicolai Stanciu gave Romania the lead by scoring from long distance in the first half, after which Razvan Marin and Denis Mihai scored two goals in the beginning of the second half to ensure the team’s 3-0 win. One of Stanciu’s shots also hit the crossbar, but despite this, Romania defeated Ukraine easily.

This was Romania’s first win in a major tournament since the upset by defeating England 3-2 24 years ago. Iordanescu became the first coach to guide Romania to the European Championship since his father, Angel, in 2016. He turned 46 on Sunday and on his birthday, his team gave him a wonderful gift with a victory.

Emotions ran high during the contest. Numerous Romanian players broke down in tears as the national song began, demonstrating the team’s resolve and patriotism on this historic stage. In an emotional show of support, the Ukrainian Football Federation played a pre-match video that brought attention to the current conflict and highlighted the horrific damage done to Ukrainian stadiums by Russian troops in May 2022.

Romania’s dominant display against Ukraine serves as a strong statement of their intent for Euro 2024. With a revitalized spirit and a determined playing style, they will be looking to build upon this momentum and challenge for a place in the latter stages of the competition.
