Formula 1’s most iconic race, the Monaco Grand Prix, will continue to entrall spectators until 2031 inclusive, following a six-year extension to the existing contract with the Automobile Club of Monaco (ACM) that runs through the 2025 season.

On Thursday, F1 announced it had signed a extension agreement with Monaco to ensure the race will remain on the calendar through to at least 2031.

“I’m delighted that Formula 1 will continue to race in Monaco until 2031,” said Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1. “The streets of Monte Carlo are unique and a famous part of Formula 1, and the Monaco Grand Prix remains a race that all drivers dream of winning.

The Monaco Grand Prix will be staged in June from 2026 as a part of the new agreement.

Formula 1 said the move was part of its “ambition to create a calendar which is sustainable for all stakeholders.”

The sport is currently making amendments to its calendar- consisting of 24 races- to help improve geographic grouping in a bid to reduce travel time and its own carbon footprint.

“This agreement signals a new era of partnership and innovation between Formula 1 and Monaco. It is the future focused leadership of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco which will allow us to create an optimised calendar, which reduces pressure on logistics, and to decrease the environmental impact of our global championship, as we continue the path towards our Net Zero goal by 2030.”

Monaco’s schedule alteration will also mean it no longer clashes with the Indianapolis 500, which is always held on the Memorial Day weekend. Both Monaco GP and the Indy 500 are part of the ‘Triple Crown of Motorsport,’ along with the 24 Hours of Le Mans, an unofficial title for the three most iconic races in motorsport.

The Monaco Grand Prix has been part of the first Formula 1 World Championship calendar since 1950, emerging as one of the most iconic sporting events in the world. It is one of the most challenging F1 tracks on the calendar due to its tight street course configuration.

The appeal of the Monaco Grand Prix has continued to rise. Its rising popularity can be gauged from the fact that the 2024 weekend was watched by a cumulative audience of over 70 million fans. It was the most viewed edition of the race in US history, and the third most-viewed F1 race of all time in the US.

Next edition of the Monaco Grand Prix will take place on May 25.
