Max Verstappen, the newly crowned 2023 F1 World Champion, showcased his continued dominance by securing a commanding victory at the Qatar Grand Prix held at the Losail International Circuit.
Having clinched his third consecutive Driver’s title by finishing second in Saturday’s Sprint race, Verstappen, driving for Red Bull, commenced the Grand Prix from pole position, as reported by Xinhua.
Unusually, concerns over tire safety prior to the race led to drivers being limited to just 18 laps before having to pit for fresh rubber. The extreme heat and humidity posed a physically demanding challenge, resulting in Williams’ Logan Sargeant retiring midway through the race due to feeling unwell.
However, Verstappen remained composed throughout the race. He skillfully avoided a first-corner collision involving the Mercedes of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. From there, the Dutchman faced no serious threats as he cruised to his 14th win in 17 Grands Prix this season.
Verstappen commented on his performance, saying, “I think what made the race was my first stint. After that, I could just manage my pace and make sure the tires were always in a good window. It was definitely a tough race out there, one of the toughest I’ve done. Top five, probably.”

Behind Verstappen, McLaren continued their impressive recent form, with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris securing another 2-3 finish for the Woking squad as they close in on fourth-placed Aston Martin in the Constructors’ Championship.
Russell recovered from his Lap 1 incident with Hamilton to climb from the back of the field to fourth place by the end of the race, ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso.
Esteban Ocon claimed seventh place for Alpine, with the two Alfa Romeos of Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu finishing eighth and ninth, respectively, matching their best results of the 2023 season.
Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez faced a challenging race, starting from the pitlane and receiving two separate five-second time penalties for exceeding track limits. He was ultimately classified in tenth place.
Aside from Sargeant, the only other driver who did not finish the race was Hamilton, who spun after contact with Russell on Lap 1, ending up stuck in a sand trap. Hamilton later accepted responsibility for the incident.
Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz did not even start the race due to a fuel leak in his Ferrari.
Verstappen’s latest victory takes his points tally to 433, and with five Grands Prix and two Sprint races remaining in 2023, he is poised to break his own record for the most points in a single season, currently at 454.
In the Drivers’ standings, Perez remains in second place with 225 points, while Hamilton holds third place with 190 points.
In the Constructors’ Championship, Red Bull now has 658 points, putting them on track to surpass Mercedes’ all-time single-season record of 765 points from 2016. Mercedes is in second place with 326 points, and Ferrari is third with 298 points.
The next race in the 2023 F1 season is the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, scheduled for October 22.
