Novak Djokovic Makes History As First Player To Reach 10 Quarters In Shanghai Masters

Novak Djokovic registered a straight set win in the fourth round of the Shanghai Masters 2024 defeating Russian Roman Safiullin 6-3, 6-2 to advance into his 10th quarter-final of the tournament.

With the win, Djokovic became the first player to record 10 quarter-final appearances in the Shanghai Masters ATP 1000 event. He has reached the quarter-finals every time he has featured in the event since its inception.  

Djokovic made his debut at Shanghai Masters in the inaugural edition in 2009. Since then, the 24-time grand slam winner has always been a top performer in Shanghai and is one win away from reaching the semi-finals for the ninth time. The 2019 edition was the only occasion where he failed to reach the last four in the Chinese city.

Novak Djokovic recorded his third win over Safiullin in as many encounters and is yet to drop a set against the 27-year-old. The Serbian only needed an hour and three minutes to register a dominating victory over Safiullin.

The 27-year-old will next face Jakub Mensik in the quarters, who prevailed over Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round to become the youngest player yet at 19 to reach the quarter-finals in Shanghai. 

Mensik had earlier stunned Andrey Rublev in the second round and will be facing Djokovic for the first time. This will be his first quarter-final appearance in the Masters 1000 event. It would be interesting to see if the Czhekia would be able to upset another giant.

The 19-year-old has lost a set each in every match at Shanghai so far and playing against Djokovic is not going to be an easy task for him.

Tennis players are now in a heated race to reach the ATP Finals 2024 and each point from the ATP events is going to be valuable. Both Djokovic and Mensik are now aiming to qualify for the season-ender tournament. 

While the Czeck player is placed fourth in the singles race for  ATP Finals 2024, Djokovic is placed eighth in Nitto ATP Finals. Their performance in Shanghai will play a valuablel role in qualification for the final championship of the year. 

World number four Djokovic, who failed to win a grand slam title this season, won the Paris Olympics 2024 gold medal in men’s tennis. He would be looking forward to end the season on a high note.
