The Chinese Grand Prix is ongoing at the Shanghai International Circuit, and it’s one of the main events in the Formula One calendar 2025 season. In the sprint race that occurred on 22 March 2025, Lewis Hamilton, driving the Ferrari, claimed victory, which marked his first win as a Ferrari driver. The main race will take place on 23 March, featuring a 5.451-kilometre track where the race will consist of 56 laps totalling a distance of 305.066 kilometres.
In the qualifying session held on the same day, 22 March 2025, Oscar Piastri achieved his first-ever Formula 1 pole position with a time of 1m 20.641s beating George Russell who was placed second with a time of 1m 30.723s. Meanwhile, Lando Norris, the championship leader, secured the third place. The first pole position of Oscar Piastri is a significant milestone for both him and McLaren.
For Oscar, it’s his first-ever pole position in Formula 1. He expressed his excitement about the same and said, “It means a lot Q3, (I) just found a lot of pace, Q1 and Q2 I was genuinely struggling but the car came alive in Q3 and I think I did, too, the laps were a little bit scruffy. I’m just pumped to be on pole.”
“First lap was better than second lap, lost a couple of 10ths and then I thought: ‘Why not send it into the hairpin?’ And gained those 0.2secs back and found a bit more for the final corner. I was going to abort that lap. I’m glad I didn’t.” he added
His teammate Lando Norris also appreciated him and said, “Oscar deserves it. He has done a very good job this weekend. It’s his first pole, and that’s always nice. Just a couple of mistakes from me, but felt a lot more comfortable for the car, a much better direction we’re going in, not too disappointed.”
Oscar Piastri’s pole position also highlights McLaren’s competitive resurgence in the 2025 season, with both their drivers finishing in the top three. It built positive momentum for the team after a difficult time in recent seasons and also gave them a systemic advantage to avoid the traffic and collisions that might result in their overall victory at the competition.
If McLaren manages to win the Chinese Grand Prix, they will be able to extend their winning streak as they won the Australian Grand Prix as well.
