The Asia Cup 2023 will probably take place somewhere in a neutral place rather than in Pakistan, which was supposed to host the prestigious continental competition this year before the ODI World Cup in India. However, India is sticking to its position that it would not travel to Pakistan. In response to India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup 2023, there have been numerous media stories claiming that the Men in Green will not travel to India for the ODI World Cup, which will take place in October-November.

Later, it was revealed that the Pakistan Cricket Board had changed its mind and would only travel to India provided their World Cup matches were held at a neutral site or were only permitted at a few locations, with Kolkata and Chennai being the likely candidates.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

The likelihood of the Babar Azam-led team visiting India is more of a realistic expectation than a hopeful one after Pakistan’s foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said during the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Goa that “Sports should be kept separated from politics and foreign policy.”

In spite of many cricket fans eagerly awaiting the release of the tournament’s schedule, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has yet to issue an official declaration confirming Pakistan’s participation in the World Cup in India.

2011 ODI World Cup

Notably, Pakistan only played one game in India during the 2011 World Cup. The 2011 ODI World Cup was an Asian hosting affair as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and India hosted the elite tournament. The only game Pakistan played in India was against India in the semi-finals. The game took place in Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. The match between the arch-rivals was a high-voltage affair and was attended by the Prime Ministers of both countries. Former Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Gilani and his Indian counterpart, Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh attended the game. The match saw India defeat Pakistan to enter the finals where they defeated Sri Lanka in Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India’s 2011 ODI World Cup victory came after a wait of 28 years when the Kapil Dev-led side won the trophy in 1983 defeating tournament favorites West Indies in the final.

Pakistan has the hosting rights for the Champions Trophy in 2025. Traveling to India this year could prove to be beneficial for Pakistan as they could use this travel as a medium to get India to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. Champions Trophy being an ICC tournament will mean that it will be tough for the Indian side to refuse to travel or play their matches outside of Pakistan.
