Palak Kohli losses to Japan’s Ayako Suzuki in Group A of Women’s Singles SU5 at the 2020 Paralympics

The match between the top-seeded Ayako Suzuki from Japan and India’s Palak Kohli lasted for 19 minutes as the Japanese shuttler clearly dominated

Day 8 of the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics saw Badminton making its maiden appearance at the Paralympic Games. The biggest sporting event, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic started on 24th August 2021 and will conclude on 5th September 2021. India’s Palak Kohli played her opening match of Women’s Singles SU5 on Wednesday.

The first match from the Group A of the Women’s Singles SU5 category was won by the 34-year-old highly experienced Ayako Suzuki in straight games 21-4, 21-7 against the 19-year-old Palak Kohli from India at Court 1 of the Yoyogi National Stadium.

Group A of the Women’s Singles SU5 category, consists of 3 players, top seed Ayako Suzuki, world no. 8 Zehra Bağlar from Turkey, and India’s world no. 11 Palak Kohli.

The format of Women’s Singles SU5 is that there are a total of 10 competitors divided into three groups; A, B, and C. Thus the top 2 players from each group will advance into the knockout rounds i.e. the Quarter-finals.

Palak hailing from Jalandhar, Punjab played her 2nd match of the day as she is competing in three events at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. She is participating in the Women’s Doubles SL3-SU5 category with the 48-year-old Parul Parmar and the Mixed Doubles SL3-SU5 event with Pramod Bhagat.
