R Ashwin, who recently retired from the game in all its forms including the Indian Premier League (IPL), has registered for the International League T20 (ILT20) auction. Of course, if selected in the auction, he will play in the UAE league’s next season, which will be from December 2 to January 4 next year.
R Ashwin’s application for the ILT20 auction
Cricbuzz reports that the organisers of ILT20 have received his application, and his name will also be listed on the auction list after the formalities of enrolment are done. The enrolment is also ongoing, with the last date being September 10 for enrolling in the auction.
“Yes, I am in talks with the organisers. Hopefully, I will have a buyer if I register for the auction,” Ashwin informed Cricbuzz, confirming his participation in the auction. The league operated under a draft method of signing players previously, but the organisers have brought in the auction mechanism this season. The auction is scheduled on September 30 in Dubai.
If Ashwin is selected in the auction, he will be the biggest Indian cricket name to play in the UAE league, which is now in its fourth season. Robin Uthappa, Yusuf Pathan, and Ambati Rayudu are the only Indians who have played for the competition, which has five franchises owned by Indian promoters.
It must be likely that Ashwin has received some guarantees from teams prior to registering for the auction. A veteran of 282 international matches across all formats, Ashwin is one of the largest match-winners and has been an integral part of the IPL since season 2 of 2009.
The 38-year-old all-rounder played for five franchises of the IPL – Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals – in 221 games. Apart from that, he played for his Tamil Nadu state side and his TNPL teams in T20 cricket. He also appeared in 65 Twenty20 Internationals.
As earlier covered by this portal, Ashwin is looking at a player-cum-coach opportunity in international leagues, and next year it is almost guaranteed that he will play for Major League Cricket (MLC) in the US and The Hundred in England.
