With billions of hardcore fans and ardent followers around the globe, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has witnessed its share of memorable triumphs, fuming controversies as well as gruesome moments that have often left the viewers in a cold sweat. Over the years, WWE has undeniably left no stone unturned in keeping the audience hooked on the intensifying wrestling matches with dramatic storylines and creepy incidents, such as the one that took place during Rock Bottom 1998 where Mark William Calaway kaka as “the Undertaker” buried Steve Austin alive.

How many times has Undertaker been ‘killed’ in storylines?

One of the most spooky and scary characters in the history of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), Mark William Calaway aka “The Undertaker”, was buried alive by Mankind at the end of “In Your House 11” in 1996. Although Undertaker defeated Mankind and won the match, Mankind with the help of Terry Gordy, the executioner, buried Undertaker alive. The scene of burying the walking dead man alive left the audience shocked and scared. Once the match was aired on television, Mankind was also brutally criticized for unfair play. The tragic incident was on television and the last scene where the undertaker’s hand emerged from the grave left the audience wondering if the dead man would return to the ring and plan on a gruesome revenge. 

  • An Injury That Ended Sid Vicious’ Wrestling Career 

The WCW Sin pay-per-view match of 2001 proved to be one of the most tragic and devastating moments in the history of wrestling that ended Sid Vicious’ wrestling career. During the match, Sid Vicious performed a high-risk stunt and climbed with full force from the second rope in order to attempt the “big-boot” move. As Sid Vicious missed his target and landed on the ground, his right foot snapped on the ground, resulting in an unfortunate compound fracture in the lower leg. The moment of this unfortunate fall was witnessed by millions of viewers around the globe. While Sid Vicious was groaning on the ground with excruciating pain, his fans from all over the world were still anticipating the wrestler making a comeback. Unfortunately, it never happened and Sid Vicious was immediately rushed to the hospital and underwent major surgery that involved inserting a rod in his leg, which proved to be the end of his flourishing wrestling career. Sin Vicious’ injury at the WCW Sin is still revered as one of the most shocking and scary moments in the history of wrestling.

  1. Darren Droz Drozdov’s Paralyzing Move At SmackDown 1999 

The Friday night smackdown was often revered as one of the most intense and high-risk tournaments ever introduced on the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) platform. In a shocking trail of events, Darren Droz Drozdov was fighting against D’Lo Brown when Brown attempted a power-bomb move on him, which basically involves lifting the opponent up with his shoulder and ruthlessly slamming them down on the ground of the wrestling ring. D’Lo Brown was in an extreme rush to defeat Droz and while attempting the high-risk “power-bomb” move, he didn’t get his grip and footing right, which ultimately led him to bang Droz’s head into the mat, which caused him a major life-threatening spinal injury. Millions of viewers watching the Friday night smackdown were scared that Droz would be able to survive the injury. The match was immediately halted and Droz was rushed to the hospital. The brutal injury broke two vertebrae in his neck and he was paralyzed leading to an unfortunate end of his highly-promising wrestling career.

  • Jerry Lawler’s Heart Attack During Live Broadcast of WWE Raw

Not every scary moment in the history of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has been associated with wrestlers; some horrifying incidents that shook the world of wrestling  have also been witnessed from other segments of the WWE arena. One such spine-chilling incident occurred when Jerry Lawler, a professional wrestler, Hall of Famer and high-profile commentator of WWE suffered a major cardiac arrest during the live episode of WWE Raw in 2012 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. While performing his commentating stint for the ongoing wrestling match between Team Hell No that consisted of Daniel Bryan and Kane and Team Prime Time Players, which consisted of Titus O’Neil and Darren Young, Jerry fell down and smashed his head into the commentator’s table. Since it was a high-stake match of the tournament, all the cameras were on the ring and nobody noticed Lawler until Michael Cole took note and promptly called in for medical assistance. Although cameras didn’t record the entire incident, Michael Cole carried on being the sole commentator for the match as Jerry Lawler was immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.

  • John Cena’s Serious Neck Injury In SummerSlam 2008 

While the hardcore fans of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) were quite used to witnessing wrestlers drenched in blood, groaning in excruciating pain and sustaining life-threatening injuries, they never quite expected John Cena to get defeated and experience the same. John Cena and Batista locked horns in one of the most anticipated “dream matches” at SummerSlam in 2008, since both of them were at the pinnacle of their wrestling careers and a few of the biggest names in WWE, their rivalry was witnessed by millions of fans around the globe. While John Cena gave a tough time to Batista with his noxious maneuvers, Batista almost defeated the Chain Gang Soldier with his well practiced signature move “Batista Bomb”, which was basically a sit-out powerbomb. Although Batista was known to be a standard-bearer of the move, something went terribly wrong and Batista lost his control as he banged John Cena on the ground, which caused a life-threatening herniated disc in Cena’s neck. Although after undergoing surgery and a few therapy sessions, Cena returned to the ring, it was indeed one of the most scary moments to witness for his ardent fans.
