The F1 Drivers Standings have undergone a major change post-disqualification at the Bahrain Grand Prix 2025, which featured a series of dramatic events in the form of disqualification and penalties. The race was won by McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, which sparked worldwide controversies about the disqualification and demotion of title favorite Max Verstappen.
One of the most consequential decisions came with the disqualification of Nico Hulkenberg. His car had excessive Plank wear, which broke the FIA Technical Regulations and led to his removal from the final race classification despite finishing 13th on the track. Further, Lando Norris was penalized for being out of position on the grid before the race started, which resulted in a five-second penalty that prevented him from finishing the race in second place.
However, he finished in the third position and continued to lead the F1 Drivers Standings, followed by Oscar Piastri, who is behind by three points. Liam Lawson received two separate penalties during the race, a five-second penalty followed by a ten-second penalty, which caused him to drop down to P16 in the final tally.
Jack Doohan was also handed a five-second penalty, while Carlos Sainz was capped off with a ten-second penalty. Mercedes drivers George Russell, who finished in second place, and Kimi Antonelli were also penalized with one-place grid drops after qualifying. These penalties reshaped both the race outcome and the F1 Drivers Standings. Max Verstappen witnessed a nightmare weekend at the Bahrain Grand Prix after a poor qualifying season. He dropped to third place in the F1 Drivers Standings with just 69 points as Oscar Piasti surpassed him.
