When you are the WWE Champion, you don’t just hold a title you carry a target on your back. Cody Rhodes knows this more than anyone right now. He has been tricked by AJ Styles, betrayed by Kevin Owens, blindsided by John Cena, and is now facing Seth Rollins. Being the top guy means everyone is after your spot, and betrayal can come from anywhere.
As WWE heads toward Crown Jewel and later WarGames, Rhodes may need backup more than ever. But history shows that allies can turn into enemies overnight. Here are three names who could be next to stab “The American Nightmare” in the back and possibly take away his championship.
Jey Uso

Jey Uso has tasted the main event spotlight before, and stepping away from it has clearly left a mark. His attitude has been shifting in recent weeks, showing more aggression and ego. On RAW, Cody tried to reach out to him at Jimmy’s request, but Jey’s eyes told a different story they were fixed on the WWE Championship.
The “Crash Out” side of Jey Uso has been taking over, and pride may push him down a darker path. If he turns on Cody, it would make for one of the most emotional storylines WWE has to offer. Jey vs Cody could deliver layered storytelling and possibly give Jey a shot at becoming a heel world champion for the first time.
CM Punk

A rivalry between Cody Rhodes and CM Punk feels inevitable and could be one of the most exciting feuds of this era. Both men are disruptors in their own way, changing the wrestling business with their unique approaches. They are also two of the best talkers in WWE today, making every promo battle must-watch television.
The interesting part is that either one could play the villain. Their chemistry on the mic is undeniable, and fans have already had a taste of it during past encounters. Cody vs Punk could easily headline a WrestleMania, and it wouldn’t just be a dream match it would be history in the making.
Randy Orton

Perhaps the most likely betrayal waiting for Cody is Randy Orton. Their story writes itself: the mentor turning on his former protege. Orton is chasing his 15th world title, and what better way than by striking down someone he once helped bring into WWE’s spotlight?
Rumors suggest that WWE has been waiting for the perfect time to ignite this feud. The seeds were already teased when Rhodes and McIntyre reportedly pitched for Orton to cost Cody the title earlier this year. Even if the timing wasn’t right then, WWE won’t hold off forever. The Apex Predator eventually gives in to the voices, and when he does, Cody Rhodes will be his prime target.
