Chennai Super Kings (CSK) got an important win on Monday (April 14) by beating Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the ongoing IPL 2025.
The victory ended their five-match losing streak. So far, the season hasn’t been going well for the five-time IPL champions.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) started their IPL 2025 campaign with a win against Mumbai Indians but then lost five matches in a row.
They also faced a big setback when their captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, was ruled out of the tournament due to an elbow injury.
After Gaikwad’s exit, CSK brought back MS Dhoni as captain. In his first game as skipper, CSK suffered a heavy loss at home against Kolkata Knight Riders. However, they bounced back with a win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
Although it wasn’t a perfect performance from CSK, they still managed to come out on top.
Batting first, LSG scored 166/7 in 20 overs. Star players like Nicholas Pooran, Aiden Markram, and Mitchell Marsh couldn’t make much of an impact, but captain Rishabh Pant, who was under pressure, played a solid innings of 63 runs to help his team reach a competitive total.
In reply, Chennai Super Kings chased down the target with three balls to spare. Openers Shaik Rasheed and Rachin Ravindra gave them a solid start, putting together 52 runs for the first wicket. But LSG fought back by taking a few quick wickets.
By the end of the 15th over, CSK were struggling at 111/5 and looked to be in trouble. However, MS Dhoni and Shivam Dube stepped up and stitched an unbeaten 57-run partnership to guide their team to victory. Dhoni stayed not out on 26 off just 11 balls, while Dube remained unbeaten on 43.
Although Chennai Super Kings beat LSG, they are still at the bottom of the points table with only two wins and five losses. While their chances of making it to the next stage look slim, they are still in the race for the playoffs.
With seven more league games left, CSK can turn their season around and make the playoffs if they manage to win at least five of those matches.
In previous seasons, 7 or 8 wins were usually enough to secure a playoff spot, so if CSK can bounce back, they still have a shot at progressing.
Last season, RCB made the playoffs with seven wins, while CSK also had seven wins but missed out due to a lower net run-rate. This time, CSK will be hoping to fix that and secure their place in the next round.
