The MotoGP Drivers Standings underwent a significant shake-up after the conclusion of the Qatar MotoGP at the Lusail International Circuit. The race delivered high drama and crucial moments in a contest that will be remembered for its on-track performance and post-race controversies.

Marc Marquez showed why he’s one of the most formidable competitors in the sport, claiming victory in both the Sprint and the main race in Doha and taking the lead in the MotoGP Drivers Standings. The race began with an instant fire as the Marquez brothers clashed on Turn 1, causing damage to Marc’s Ducati. Thus, the incident was followed by Franco Morbidelli, who took the lead, however, a late race error allowed Marc to regain his lead and eventually claim the title.

The post-race atmosphere was electrified by a dramatic penalty. Maverick Vinales, who crossed the line in second position and seemed to set a historic record for KTM, was handed a 16-second penalty for tire pressure infringement. This incident resulted in a dramatic change in the MotoGP Drivers Standings and the final results as he dropped from P2 to P14.

The penalty put Bagnaia in second and Morbidelli in third position, resulting in another Ducati dominant result as the top three positions were claimed by the team. This led to widespread controversy, as this pattern is becoming increasingly familiar in the MotoGP 2025 season. Meanwhile, the race was further dramatised by Jorge Martin’s crash, which ended up in a hospital again.

The penalty to Vinales and Jorge Martin’s crash had a crucial effect on the MotoGP Drivers Standings. Marc Marquez’s victory, alongside the penalties of his rivals, allowed him to take the lead again, surpassing his brother, Alex Marquez. Bagnaia’s consistent performance held him in the third position, while Morbidelli claimed the fourth spot. As of now, Ducati is leading the MotoGP Drivers Standings as the top 5 positions are claimed by the team.

Vinales, despite his on-track performance, suffered a major drop due to a penalty, dropping him to 18, while Jorge Martin could not improve his position and remains at the bottom of the table.
