India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been hospitalized in Sydney following an injury he picked up during the third ODI against Australia. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer suffered an impact injury to his left lower rib cage while fielding. He was immediately taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans later revealed that he had a laceration injury to his spleen.
According to the BCCI, Shreyas Iyer is currently under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. Understanding the seriousness of the situation, Iyer’s parents have reportedly applied for urgent visas to travel to Sydney and be by his side.
BCCI Confirms Shreyas Iyer is Stable and Under Close Monitoring
The BCCI has also moved quickly to calm concerns about Shreyas Iyer’s condition. In a statement, the board said that its medical team, in consultation with specialists in both Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his recovery. “The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas Iyer to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” the BCCI added.
How the Injury Happened
The unfortunate incident occurred on Saturday during the third IND vs AUS ODI when Iyer attempted a catch off Harshit Rana’s delivery. He landed awkwardly on his left side, impacting his elbows and ribs. The pain was immediate. Although he managed to complete the catch, Iyer was seen clutching his ribs in distress and soon needed medical assistance to leave the field.
Doubt Over South Africa Series Participation
This injury now casts serious doubt over Shreyas Iyer’s availability for India’s upcoming home ODI series against South Africa, scheduled to begin on November 30. Fans are hoping for a quick and full recovery, as Iyer has been a key figure in India’s middle order alongside KL Rahul and Axar Patel.
Iyer’s Consistent Form and Importance to the Team
Shreyas Iyer’s recent performances have made his value to the team crystal clear. In the current series, he scored 72 runs in two games, including a vital 61 off 77 balls in the second ODI at Adelaide. That innings featured a strong century partnership with captain Rohit Sharma.
Overall, Shreyas Iyer has been in superb form this year. Across 11 matches and 10 innings, he has piled up 496 runs at an impressive average of 49.60 and a strike rate of 89.53. His record includes five fifties and a top score of 79.
A big highlight of his year was India’s ICC Champions Trophy-winning campaign, where he was India’s top run-scorer and the second-highest overall in the tournament. He finished with 243 runs in five innings, averaging 48.60 with two fifties.
