In the last 22 editions of the FIFA World Cup, the players who have made the most appearances in the world-class tournament of the football world are Lionel Messi, Lothar Matthäus, Miroslav Klose, Paolo Maldini, and Cristiano Ronaldo. These are the top five players who have made 20+ appearances in the World Cup. The 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup is set to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, with 104 matches, 16 cities, and 48 teams.

1. Lionel Messi –  26

Lionel Messi has been a leading performance maker in the World Cup, playing for Argentina. He made his debut in the FIFA World Cup on 16th June 2006. The match was against Serbia and Montenegro. At 18 years old, Lionel was the youngest-ever World Cup player in Argentina’s arena, and in the second match of the group stage, he played the match in the 75th minute when head coach Jose Pekerman sent him onto the field for Maxi Rodriguez, and the rest is history after that. Messi then played in the 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022 FIFA World Cups, and with 26 appearances in the event, he stood at the top of the list.

2. Lothar Matthäus – 25

On 20th June 1982, 21-year-old Lothar Matthäus made his World Cup debut in the FIFA World Cup in Spain for West Germany against Chile. In the 61st minute of the match, he replaced Paul Breitner, and in that match, West Germany won by 4-1. The best match of Lothar’s career in the FIFA World Cup came in 1990 against Yugoslavia, where he scored 2 goals, including a legendary solo goal. Matthäus made a total of 25 appearances in the FIFA World Cup, playing in the 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, and 1998 FIFA World Cups.

3. Miroslav Klose – 24

In the Group E match of the FIFA World Cup 2002, a 24-year-old striker, Miroslav Klose, made his debut on 1st June 2002 against Saudi Arabia at the Dome in Japan. He scored one goal in that match, and Germany made a dominating 8-0 victory over Saudi Arabia. Miroslav played in the 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014 editions of the FIFA World Cup, and with 16 goals in World Cups, he stood as one of the most significant goal scorers in FIFA World Cup history. With 24 match appearances, he stood at number 3.

4. Paolo Maldini –  23

Italian player Paolo Maldini, on 9th June 1990, made his FIFA World Cup debut against Austria, and he came as a substitute for Italy. In that match, Italy won by 1-0, but Paolo didn’t score a goal in that match. However, his defensive skills acted like a wall for Italy, and he showed a great attitude on the field on his debut on the world-class stage. With 23 appearances, he finds himself among the top 4 players in the record, and he played in the 1990, 1994, 1998, and 2002 FIFA World Cups.

5. Cristiano Ronaldo – 22

On June 11th, 2006, a 21-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo made his debut against Angola during a group stage match in Cologne, wearing the number 17 jersey. Cristiano came into the World Cup with very high expectations from the fans and management. His debut match wasn’t that fascinating, as he got a yellow card in the 60th minute of the match, and his fouls got him withdrawn from the field. Portugal won by a 1-0 margin in that match because of Pauleta’s goal. In 22 match appearances, Ronaldo has scored 8 goals across the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022 FIFA World Cups, and this makes him one of the legendary players on this stage.
