The World No. 1 and top seed Novak Djokovic, 34, registered a win as he defeated the 25-year-old Italy’s Matteo Berrettini 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 in the 2021 US Open quarter-final. The match lasted for 3 hours and 30 minutes at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on Wednesday night.

Hence, with this win, the 34-year-old Serbian reached his 12th Semi-final in New York.

As a result, Novak Djokovic is just two wins away from clinching Calendar Year Grand Slam – a feat when a player wins all 4 Grand Slam titles in the same year. The last time this happened in Men’s Singles was in 1969 when Rod Laver achieved this feat.

Not only that but if Djokovic reaches and wins the final, he will also move past Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to stand atop with 21st Grand Slam Titles.

For Djokovic and Berrettini, this was their 3rd encounter in 2021 having met in the Quarter-final of Roland-Garros and Final of Wimbledon. Both times it was the World No. 1 who won.

However, the stats of the semi-final match revealed that Matteo Berrettini’s 17 aces were better than Novak Djokovic’s 12. But the Italian had hit 43 unforced errors.

As a result, the three-time champion, Novak Djokovic will next face the 2020 US Open Runner-up and the Tokyo Olympic Gold Medalist Alexander Zverev in the Semi-final. It will be held on 11th September, Saturday.

Meanwhile, 4th seed Alexander Zverev from Germany booked his SF berth by winning against South Africa’s Lloyd Harris in straight sets.
