Cricket is recognised as the gentleman’s game and it is expected that the cricketers will oblige to that fact. But some cricketers in return for some quick money take the wrong step. Their decisions not only tarnish their image but it also harms the game’s image. In some instances these players have even damaged their careers. Here is a look at some of the cricketers who went to jail.
Mohammed Amir, Mohammed Asif and Salman Butt
A scandal involving match fixing occurred in 2010 while Pakistan was touring England. Mohammed Amir was at his peak when he was 17 years old, but he chose the wrong route. Salman Butt instructed Mohammad Amir to throw no-balls during the Test match at Lords in 2010. During the spot-fixing controversy, Mohammed Amir and Mohammed Asif were the primary offenders.
Southwark Crown Court sentenced Mohammed Amir to six months in prison in November 2011 for conspiring to commit gambling fraud and conspiring to receive corrupt payments.
The court sentenced Asif to 12 months in prison and Salman Butt to 30 months.
Sreesanth
Several domestic cricketers were included in the match-fixing controversy involving the Indian fast bowler Sreesanth. It ended up being a catastrophe for the fast bowler.
Rahul Dravid was keeping an eye on Sreesanth as he played for the Rajasthan Royals. According to the study, when the pace bowler bowls with a towel in his stomach, it is expected that he will leak 14 or more runs.
He received a lot of abuse from the supporters, and his photos were also set on fire. Sreesanth waged a valiant battle to overturn the ruling as the BCCI adopted a zero-tolerance attitude. Moving to the apex court was the pace bowler.
Rubel Hossain
Another professional cricketer who was imprisoned was the Bangladeshi pace bowler Rubel Hossain. His arrest followed a report of rape from a long-term partner. According to Hossain’s girlfriend, he abandoned his promise to marry her and attacked her instead.
Prior to the 2015 ICC World Cup being contested in Australia, he was sentenced to prison. For the benefit of the country, BCB requested that Rubel be released from custody. The woman took her complaint back.
Bangladesh lost to India in the World Cup 2015 quarterfinals, despite Rubel Hossain’s outstanding performance for Bangladesh.
Ben Stokes
Ben Stokes, the English all-rounder, was embroiled in a Bristol bar fight. Alex Hales accompanied him. Due to the fact that it was a holiday, they remained both incarcerated overnight and the following day.
Stokes attended the hearing while Alex Hales left the case. Stokes cited justifications for rescuing gay couples who had been attacked by the men he had thrashed.
Ben Stokes appeared out of sorts after drinking on the night of the club, according to the men engaged in the case. The street camera video also captured Stokes hitting the victim.
Wasim Akram
Wasim Akram, a top pace bowler for Pakistan, went to prison. When Pakistan toured the West Indies in 1993, the event happened while he was still playing.
Wasim Akram, along with his close companions Mushtaq Ahmed, Waqar Younis, and Aqib Javed, were all implicated in the incident. They were all jogging along the beach’s edge when everything happened.
Waqar Younis, Aqib Javed, Mushtaq Ahmed, and Wasim Akram were all detained for possessing illegal drugs. The precautionary sample revealed that the component was very similar to a prohibited substance. Bail had gotten them all out of jail.
