Australia’s Cricket Supremacy: For quite some time, Australia’s dominance in the sport of cricket, and specifically the women’s game, has gone unchallenged.

From their unparalleled track record in the ICC field of events to their near-perfect record of bilateral series, Australia Women have established the gold standard. But with the 13th edition of the Women’s World Cup 2025 drawing near, indications are that the playing field can now level at last.

Australia Women Break 400 Once More  a reminder of their firepower

Australia Women broke the 400-run barrier in an ODI for the first time since Belinda Clark’s legendary 1997 innings. Although India – with Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Deepti Sharma at the helm – flashed signs of brilliance, they couldn’t quite get there, presenting Australia with another series victory  their 11th consecutive bilateral ODI series win over India.

Australia’s ICC Tournament Legacy Unbeaten So far:

7 ODI World Cup titles (out of 12 editions) + 2 runner-up appearances

6 T20 World Cup titles, two of which were hat-tricks

Just one ODI series loss in the past 31 since 2014 (vs England, 2023 Women’s Ashes)

A Deep Dive Into the Numbers: Are Teams Catching Up?

Win-Loss Ratios Since 2022 World Cup Final

Australia: 26 wins in 30 games (W/L ratio: 6.5)

India & England: Tied at 2.083

In the last cycle (2017-2022), Australia improved in win-loss ratio of 15.5, much ahead of the next team. Now, the gap has closed.

Recent Vulnerabilities: Record Defeats & Milestone Concessions

Lost 1-2 to England in the 2023 Ashes their first bilateral series loss in 10 years

Lost three of their six largest defeats ever (by 69, 84, and 102 runs)

Lost a record 369 runs in the second innings against India the highest run chase in Women’s ODI history

Dropped to 25/2 in Powerplay recently, their second-lowest 10-over score since 2016

Evidently, Australia’s supremacy over cricket is now being tested not merely on paper, but on the field as well.

Batting and Bowling: The Statistical Shift

Team Batting & Bowling Metrics Comparison

2017-2022 Cycle (Excluding WC 2022):

Australia Bat Avg: 42.36, Next Best: 33.56 (SA)

Bat SR: 86.68, Next Best: 79.84 (NZ)

Bowl Avg: 21.23, Next Best: 25.93 (ENG)

Post-2022 World Cup:

Australia Bat Avg: 38.79, India: 38.96

Bat SR: 91.73, England: 92.96

Bowl Avg: 22.19, England: 23.41

Batting Evolution: Australia’s Cricket Supremacy:

Team Average (2017–22) Average (2022–25) Strike Rate (2017–22) Strike Rate (2022–25) 100s (2017–22) 100s (2022–25)
AUS-W 39.98 35.53 86.72 91.99 11 10
IND-W 28.52 33.72 71.17 88.23 4 15
ENG-W 27.92 31.43 76.72 90.48 9 13
SA-W 29.10 32.00 70.36 82.31 4 17

India, England, and South Africa have made enormous gains in strike rate, each improving by 10-17 points. Australia merely improved 5.27 points compared.

Bowling Comparison: Marginal Gains for Rivals

Though Australia’s bowling is still elite, both India and England have closed the gap:

Australia’s average bowling increased marginally from 21.23 to 22.19

England has moved from 25.93 to 23.41

India has moved from 30.93 to 30.63

The figures demonstrate a convergence.

Alyssa Healy’s Dip in Form: A Watchpoint to Consider

Healy’s power hitting was instrumental in Australia’s cricket superiority during the period of 2017–22:

1635 runs at 52.74, SR: 101.80

Behind only Tammy Beaumont for total runs

Post-2022:

625 runs at 27.17, SR: 89.28

Crossed 10-over mark only in 7 out of 23 innings

In contrast, Beth Mooney (1036 runs at 49.33) has led the scoring charts for Australia post-2022. Younger talents like Phoebe Litchfield and Annabelle Sutherland are stepping up, but more is needed from experienced players.

India and England Are Closing In

India’s average 1st innings score post-2022: 282 (Australia: 296)

Average Women’s ODI 1st innings score in India since 2022 WC: 292

England handed Australia their only series defeat since 2014

India forced them to suffer record defeats and record chases

2025 World Cup: Is the Field Finally Level?

With India and Sri Lanka co-hosting the World Cup, high-scoring matches are on the cards. Net run rates and win margins could prove to be the decider, not only for qualification, but for seeding.

Australia still holds an advantage psychologically, but the competition is catching up. If there is an upset on October 29, 30, or November 2 it will not be the outlier that it once was.
