BBL 2025: Bizzare Debut Of Liam Haskett
A Historical Day in (BBL) Big Bash League: Father of Bowler Catches Son’s Six.

It’s one of those moments that will be etched forever in the memories of the Big Bash League (BBL). In such a moment, another debutant bowler never knew how difficult the day would become for him. He saw the ball he bowling placed over the boundary and into the safe hands of his father. The match between Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat at Adelaide Oval was very exciting, with 27,000 excited spectators cheering for the teams.
The Big Moment: A Father’s Pride and Disappointment

Liam Haskett was a left-arm fast bowler, one of the greatest dreams of the young cricketers. Making his debut for BBL, it wasn’t the most glorious entry he would have hoped for, though. Within his opening over, he saw Brisbane Heat’s Michael Neser thump the ball over the boundary twice to run 15. He managed to get Neser out at the end of that over but could not save the damage that had been done.
A Testy Start to the Innings for Liam Haskett

Liam couldn’t make an even worse beginning in the third over of play either when McSweeney belted successive fours, though a thrilling incident took it onto a memorable path with his next delivery hitting high up over deep square leg stands.
At this time, the ball went in an unanticipated direction to land directly in the hands of Liam’s father, Lloyd Haskett, who was watching the match from the stands. The crowd erupted as Lloyd took the catch but unlike most of the fans would have done that, Lloyd was far from seeming to be excited.
Surprising Catch: A Father’s Mixed Emotions
Lloyd, proud of his son as he debuted on the field, couldn’t stop the droop when the ball was thrown over the boundary for a six. When all around the cheering crowds stood there, Lloyd could just look up at them, acknowledging this moment, while simply tossing the ball back onto the ground. It had more to do with his own frustration in his son’s first day at play that this was dominated by a six.
Relevance of the Story

The final moment was not missed by those watching the action at home. Fox Sports commentator and Australian cricketing legend Adam Gilchrist was also on hand, revealing an interesting piece of information on the commentary. It said that the person who caught the ball was none other than Liam’s father.
“That man there is Liam Haskett’s dad,” Gilchrist remarked, pointing out the proud yet slightly disappointed father. “He sat back there and did not look thrilled at all with proceedings. He played it very cool, but he was so disappointed that his son, on debut, had just been dispatched.”
Former England captain Michael Vaughan was equally astonished, saying, “No way. That must be the first time ever.”
A Rare Incident of Its Kind in BBL History

It was a moment when a bowler’s father grabbed a catch from his own son’s ball. This was one of the few times a cricketing scenario has met such an abiding mixture of emotions – pride, disappointment, and surprise – to make a marvelous memory in the Big Bash League that will be discussed for years to come.
Although he has not made that dream debut Liam Haskett will forever go down in BBL history having his father snatched the six which he conceded. But to Liam Haskett, after all the frustrations surrounding his first-game performance, a silver lining came in terms of being part of one of cricketing’s oddest moments by the fact of his dad grasping it home.
