In a closely-fought contest at the SCG, (BBL) Big Bash League 2024-25 has seen a blistering innings from Ben Duckett, who played a knock that won the game for Melbourne Stars against the Sydney Sixers. Duckett’s explosive performance with the bat left fans in awe as he blasted 68 runs off just 29 balls, including 10 fours and 2 sixes. His fiery batting display featured a remarkable achievement – hitting 6 fours in a single over bowled by Akeal Hossain, the talented West Indian spinner.

Melbourne Stars Set a Challenging Total

Melbourne Stars, batting first after Sydney Sixers won the toss, posted a competitive total of 194 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs. The top order, led by Duckett, dominated the Sixers’ bowling attack, with Duckett’s aggressive stroke play setting the tone for the innings. His whirlwind knock not only helped propel the Stars to a strong total but also showcased his ability to take on world-class bowlers.

Along with Duckett’s scintillating performance, Glenn Maxwell added valuable hands with aggressive 32 runs, whereas captain Marcus Stoinis chipped in with quickfire 20 runs. The lower order chipped in useful runs as well, and both Tom Curran and Hilton Cartwright scored 15 runs. Still, it was all in vain because Melbourne Stars lost wickets at regular intervals. They were eventually dismissed on 194/9.

Akeal Hossain’s Uncharacteristic Struggles in BBL

One of the BBL highlights of the game was how Duckett played against the bowling skills of Akeal Hossain, who performed well both in international as well as franchise cricket. Hossain, who gained a reputation as a fabulous spinner, had an ordinary day at the SCG. His fourth over, in the innings of the Melbourne Stars, was his costliest over as he conceded 6 boundaries at the hands of Duckett. Hossain conceded 24 runs from that over and ended with some very disappointing figures of 1 wicket for 50 runs in 4 overs.

Hossain was not working that well with his line and length, and the opposing team took advantage. Duckett made some use of it, scoring fours around the ground. Yes, Hossain did concede one wicket but certainly couldn’t be seen talking of economy as it turned out to be high as a result of him losing this match completely.

Sydney Sixers Set Target of 195 Runs

Melbourne Stars posted a target of 195 runs. Sydney Sixers, therefore, chased this down in the 20 overs that have been allotted. The Sixers had made a perfect start to their campaign as they won both their matches so far in the season. Therefore, they were sure to enter the chase with all the confidence.

Sydney Sixers’ bowling team, which has been brilliant so far in the season, will also play an important role in limiting the total of the Stars. Jackson Bird was the stand-out bowler for the Sixers, taking 3 wickets for 35 runs in 3 overs. Todd Murphy and Ben Dwarshuis picked up 2 wickets each.

A Thrilling Chase on the Cards in BBL

The SCG match has set up a thrilling second half, wherein the Sydney Sixers chased down 195 runs with 8 wickets in hand. James Vince helped the Sixers to continue in great form this season and continued their winning streak. However, with Melbourne Stars’ powerful batting lineup, led by Duckett’s brilliance, the chase promised a thrilling contest in which Sydney Sixers’ batsmen stole the show.
