During preparation for the eagerly awaited Champions Trophy 2025, New Zealand made a substantial modification to their lineup. The injured fast bowler Ben Sears ruled himself out of contention, allowing for the return of Jacob Duffy. Duffy may not yet be a common name on everyone’s lips as yet, but the way he has been playing in domestic cricket is what secured his place in the national lineup.

Duffy’s career in New Zealand domestic cricket had a good early run, punctuated by prolific wicket-takes. He took 29 wickets during the 2017-18 Plunket Shield season, an incredible figure that made his name synonymous with quality bowling. In the subsequent season, he kept impressing, taking 25 wickets from 11 matches in the 2018-19 Ford Trophy, continuing to prove his mettle as one of New Zealand’s most dependable bowlers at the domestic level.

In the T20 format, the efficacy of Duffy was in open view in Super Smash T20, where he took 13 wickets off 9 games. His strong performances in the domestic circuit have made him a valuable asset among New Zealand’s fast-bowling lineup to gain recognition at the international stage as well beyond local tournaments.

Duffy’s International Career: Making His Mark

Jacob Duffy debuted in the T20I for New Zealand against Pakistan in 2020, and soon enough, he was making his presence felt. In his first-ever T20 game, Duffy produced a memorable performance, bagging 4 wickets for 33 runs, and he was awarded Player of the Match. This success gave him early momentum, even though he continued to struggle hard to find a place in the national team.

In 2024, Duffy was awarded his first central contract by New Zealand Cricket, a major achievement in his career that attested to his significance in New Zealand’s future plans. This came after Duffy’s consistent improvement and strong performances, such as his impressive performance in the 2024 T20 series against Sri Lanka.

Duffy has been in the form of his life lately, especially in the recently concluded T20 series against Sri Lanka in 2024. Across three games, he picked up 8 wickets and was awarded the Player of the Series. His ball-swinger nature and the ability to get extra bounce out of the pitch make him a prized possession for New Zealand, especially considering the challenges that come with playing in the Champions Trophy.

Jacob Duffy’s Bowling Style and Strengths

Duffy’s main asset is his swing bowling. Famous for his ability to swing the ball both ways, he always puts pressure on batsmen and finds it hard for them to settle at the crease. Although his pace varies between 130-140 km/h, not express pace, his attack plan and swing bowling render him a threatening candidate for any batsman.

Over the course of his career, Duffy has made every effort to correct technical errors in his bowling action. His enhanced follow-through and increased consistency have helped him maintain his success, enabling him to play an even more important part in New Zealand’s fast-bowling attack.

Duffy’s Role in the Champions Trophy 2025

With the likes of Trent Boult and Tim Southee already included in the New Zealand team, Duffy’s addition brings depth and diversity to the team’s pace attack. His skill to swing the ball and put pressure on opposition batsmen will be immensely important during the Champions Trophy, where New Zealand will require all their fast bowlers to perform at their best. If Duffy can maintain his impressive performances, he might become a match-winner for New Zealand during the tournament.

Duffy’s Chance to Shine on the International Stage

Jacob Duffy being selected in the New Zealand team for the Champions Trophy 2025 is a reflection of his thoroughness and steady performances in local cricket. Although he will not be nearly as well-known as some of his teammates across the world, his bowling talent and current form have seen him earn a spot in the squad.

With the fast-bowling resources available to New Zealand augmented by the addition of Duffy, the squad will be depending on him to produce key performances in one of cricket’s major events. If he continues as he is, Duffy can potentially make a huge difference and establish himself as an important player for New Zealand in the Champions Trophy.
