With 15 editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) done the 16th edition will kick off on 31st March where last season’s winner Gujarat Titans will take on Chennai Super Kings. In the league where players earn up to INR 18.50 crores, the umpires are also paid well enough.
Umpires in the IPL play a huge role as they ensure that the games are played in a fair manner. Apart from officiating in the match umpires are also supposed to inspect the pitch, playing conditions and playing equipment.
There are two salary grades in the IPL. There is an Elite Panel grade who earns INR 1, 98, 000 for every match they stand in. There is also Developmental grade umpires who earn INR 59, 000. The elite panel grade in IPL consists of the umpires that are in the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires.
This amount is apart from the fixed salary the umpires receive every season. The fixed amount salary is INR 7, 33, 000 per season.
The umpires list for the 2023 season: Richard Illingworth (Eng), Paul Reiffel (Aus), Christopher Gaffaney (NZ), Nitin Menon, Anil Chaudhary, Ulhas Gandhe, Virender Sharma, C. Shamshuddin, S. Ravi, K Srinivasan, Yashwant Barde, Anil Dandekar, K.N. Ananthapadmanabhan, Vineet Kulkarni, and Pashchim Pathak.
Out of these umpires, only four umpires are listed in the elite panel grade. These four umpires are Richard Illingworth, Paul Reiffel, Christopher Gaffaney and Nitin Menon. Nitin Menon is the only umpire in the elite panel grade.
The rest of the domestic Indian umpires are in the Developmental grade. The developmental grade umpires also receive training from the Elite Panel grade umpires so that they can get ready for promotions in future seasons.
