Emma Raducanu thrashed Shelby Rogers in the round of 16 of the US Open to reach the Quarterfinals of the competition. She previously defeated 41st seed Sorribes Tormo 6-0, 6-1 in the third round.
The youngster ran riot at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the biggest tennis court on the planet. In just 65 minutes, Raducanu defeated Rogers 6-2 and 6-1, to reach her maiden grand slam Quarterfinals. She became only the third qualifier to reach the quarterfinals of a grand slam. Meanwhile, Rogers’s defeat to the youngster comes after an impressive third-round win over World #1 women’s player Ashley Barty. Shelby Rogers was the last American seed in the women’s draw.
The teenager got off to a nervous start with Rogers taking an early 2-0 lead. However, Raducanu took a grip on the game thereafter. She won an impressive 11 consecutive points to take the first set 6-2 and lead the second set 5-0. However, Rogers generated three break points on Raducanu’s serve and broke the winning run. However, the youngster continued to hit through her forehand right until the end.
Raducanu was ranked 366th in the summer. With this win, she will now be ranked inside the top 80. Meanwhile, the 18-year-old is one win away from leapfrogging fellow British stars Heather Watson and Johanna Konta to become the nation’s number one player.
Emma Raducanu will next face a stern test from Belinda Bencic, 11th seed, and current Olympic gold medalist in the Quarterfinals.
