As a result, periodicals like Bleacher Report will start compiling their lists of the best WWE games and shows of the year. Over the previous nine months, there has undoubtedly not been a lack of significant newsworthy events or bizarre occurrences. The news cycle has been dominated by high-profile returns, but there have been plenty more noteworthy matches as well.
There are so many contenders for the top match of 2022 from WWE and All Elite Wrestling that it’s almost impossible to choose. For the sake of this article, we reduced the field to five contenders.
Cody Rhodes vs. Seth Rollins
One of the greatest highlights of 2022 will be the appearance of Cody Rhodes back in the WWE at WrestleMania 38. The American Nightmare unfortunately sustained an injury that kept him out for the majority of the year, but he and Seth Rollins were still able to provide an incredible trilogy of matches.
The finest of the three matches was their Hell in a Cell match at the named pay-per-view. One of the night’s most frightening pictures was Rhodes’ horrifying pec injury, which had many spectators wondering how he would be able to perform.
Orange Cassidy vs. Will Ospreay
This post would be filled with evidence of how incredible Will Ospreay was in 2022 if we included matches from New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
The United Empire’s supremo faced Kazuchika Okada twice—once at Wrestle Kingdom and once more in the G1 Climax finals. Both interactions would have been at the top of the list. Among many others, he had outstanding contests with Tetsuya Naito, Jon Moxley, Mike Bailey, Dax Harwood, and Michael Oku.
Sheamus vs. Gunther
In 2022, Sheamus has had a tremendous streak. His career was significantly revived when paired with Brawling Brutes, and Gunther has since grown to be one of his most formidable competitors.
The two have participated in three unforgettable bouts, despite what would seem like recency bias. Our opinion is that their well-received confrontation at WWE Clash at the Castle is a lock for match of the year.
