Kolkata Knight Riders have now been dealt a major setback prior to the start of the IPL 2026 season as young fast bowler Harshit Rana is expected to miss out on almost all of the tournament due to a knee injury he has sustained.
The young Indian fast bowler underwent surgery on his knee in February and is currently undergoing rehabilitation, supervised by the medical team of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). However, no official announcement has been made regarding his expected return to competitive cricket. This may affect the bowling strategy of the Kolkata Knight Riders for the upcoming IPL season.
Harshit Rana Injury: What Happened?
According to reports, Harshit Rana suffered the injury during India’s warm-up match against South Africa ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The fast bowler suffered a ligament strain in his right knee while bowling only one over in the match. Following this, Harshit Rana was asked to withdraw from the tournament after being evaluated by medical personnel.
He was subsequently removed from the T20 World Cup squad and replaced by fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, who played for India in its opening match against the US men’s national cricket team during the tournament. India went on to win the T20 World Cup, but Harshit Rana missed a golden opportunity to feature for his country at such a prestigious tournament.
Rehab Status and Return Timeline
He is currently receiving rehab under the BCCI medical team for his knee rehabilitation; part of this program includes gaining back his match fitness after strengthening his knee in rehab.
However, his return has yet to be confirmed, which makes his participation in the IPL 2026 uncertain. If his rehab is longer than expected, he may miss the entire season of the Indian Premier League, which begins on March 28. Missing the IPL will be the second straight tournament that Harshit will be missing because of injury.
Recognition Despite Injury
Despite his recent injury setback, Harshit Rana has recently been recognized for his performances in international cricket.
He was awarded the Best International Debutant award at the BCCI Awards, which speaks volumes for his performance in his debut matches in international cricket, as well as his potential as a rising star in India’s fast bowling lineup.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ Bowling Concerns for IPL 2026
The absence of Harshit Rana poses a problem for Kolkata Knight Riders, as they were already dealing with another significant bowling change. Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman will also miss the IPL 2026, as the BCCI reportedly asked Kolkata to release the player in the wake of geopolitical tensions between India and Bangladesh earlier in the year.
To compensate for the loss, Kolkata has signed Zimbabwean fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani, who earlier pulled out of his contract with Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League.
KKR Fast Bowling Options for IPL 2026
Despite Rana’s nonavailability, Kolkata Knight Riders have a number of options in terms of pace bowlers available for the season.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ current fast bowlers are:
Matheesha Pathirana
Vaibhav Arora
Akash Deep
Umran Malik
Kartik Tyagi
The team also has all-rounders in Cameron Green and Ramandeep Singh, who can help with bowling when the need arises.
However, there are fitness issues with Matheesha Pathirana, as he was earlier unable to play in the T20 World Cup due to a calf injury sustained in a game against Australia national cricket team.
KKR’s Opening Match in IPL 2026
Kolkata Knight Riders will start their IPL 2026 season on March 29, facing the Mumbai Indians at the historic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Kolkata Knight Riders Fixtures after the First Match:
Sunrisers Hyderabad
Punjab Kings
Lucknow Super Giants
All three games will be played at home in the evening.
Impact of Harshit Rana’s Absence on KKR
The absence of Harshit Rana could be critical for Kolkata Knight Riders’ bowling strategy in IPL 2026, as he is known for his speed and ability to perform in critical situations of matches, which made him an integral part of their fast bowling line-up.
The absence of Rana would force Kolkata Knight Riders to depend on their remaining fast bowlers and newly recruited players to maintain their balance in fast bowling.
