Awards were presented to players for their performance in each match for a considerable amount of time previous to the Cricket World Cup. The Man of the Match award was given to these players. Through the Cricket World Cup, this pattern persisted. A player who was named Man of the Match in the championship game typically did something to win the game for their team and, in essence, the World Cup. Since 1992, one player has been named “Man of the Tournament” at the conclusion of the World Cup.

1992 Cricket World Cup

Man of the Tournament 1992 – New Zealand Martin Crowe – 456 runs

Martin Crowe, a batsman and captain for New Zealand, started the 1992 Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand with an impressive 100 runs without being out. He only managed to score 5 and 3 runs in the following two innings, but he battled back to finish with 74 against Zimbabwe and 81 against the West Indies. He contributed 24 runs, 73 runs not out, and three runs as New Zealand advanced to the Semi-Finals in the group games.

Crowe led the way with 91 off just 83 balls in the Semi-Final match against Pakistan, bringing New Zealand from 2/39 to 6/221 as they finished on 7/262. It wasn’t enough, though, as Pakistan triumphed by one run. Crowe received the first Man of the Tournament award for his outstanding batting achievements, despite the fact that Pakistan went on to win the World Cup. He had a 114.00 average, 1 century, and 3 fifty-sixes.

1996 Cricket World Cup

Man of the Tournament 1996 – Sri Lanka Sanath Jayasuriya – 221 runs (strike rate of 132) and 7 wickets

Sanath Jayasuriya, a batsman, participated in 6 of Sri Lanka’s victories in the 1996 Cricket World Cup matches. following a mere 6 against Zimbabwe. Jayasuriya played well against India, scoring 79 runs off 76 balls to lead Sri Lanka to victory. His subsequent runs totals against Kenya and England were 44 and 82, respectively. While Jayasuriya was out for one in the semi-final match against India, he made a contribution with the ball by dismissing Sachin Tendulkar, Sanjay Manjrekar, and Ajay Jadeja.

His wickets caused a collapse that carried Sri Lanka to the championship and dropped India from 1/98 to 8/120. Jayasuriya didn’t play well in the championship; he finished with just 9 points and a strike rate of 1/43. However, he was outdone by other batsmen, including Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed a record 523 runs at an average of 87.16. Jayasuriya received the Man of the Tournament honor for his thrilling and aggressive strokeplay as well as his ability to win matches.

1999 Cricket World Cup

Man of the Tournament 1999 – South Africa Lance Klusener – 281 runs (strike rate of 122) and 17 wickets

When South Africa started playing One Day International cricket, Lance Klusener, an all-rounder, was a member of the side. He participated in nine World Cup games and came close to playing in ten with his cameo against Australia in the semifinal, but it was in vain because the game was drawn. In this World Cup, Klusener averaged 20.58 with the ball and 140.5 with the bat.

Klusener won his first game of the World Cup against India, scoring 12 runs while taking 3/66. In subsequent games, he continued his strong play, scoring 52* and 3/21 against Sri Lanka, 48* and 1/16 against England, 5/21 against Kenya, and 52* and 1/36 in a tie with Zimbabwe to help South Africa advance to the Super Sixes stage. For the first time in the Cup, Klusener struggled with the bat in the Super Sixes, scoring just 4 against New Zealand, although he still claimed 2/46 with the ball. He scored 36 and took 1/53 against Australia in another losing effort, and he hit 46* and took 1/41 against Pakistan. Klusener entered the World Cup semi-final when the score was 6/175 and the South Africans needed 39 runs in 5 overs to win.

Klusener’s 31 runs in only 16 deliveries helped South Africa draw the game, but an Allan Donald run out left it tied, sending Australia (with Klusener still standing unbeaten) through to the final as per previous outcomes. Klusener’s 122 strike rate demonstrated his rapid batting style, although his average was higher than his strike rate itself. While Shane Warne was the top wicket-taker and Rahul Dravid was the top run-scorer (461 runs) (20). He won the series’ man award for his overall performance.

2003 Cricket World Cup

Man of the Tournament 2003 – India Sachin Tendulkar – 673 runs and 2 wickets

India had a good World Cup performance in 2003. They only lost two games, both to the eventual champions Australia, and they advanced to the final. The record-breaking performance of “Little Master” Sachin Tendulkar was a key factor in this success. Tendulkar scored 673 runs at an average of 61.18 in 11 innings. While everything else was crumbling, he opened his World Cup campaign with a 52 against the Netherlands and a valiant 36 against Australia. He continued to score goals throughout the World Cup after that.
