Reportedly, the IPL 2025 opener will see a clash between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). That great faceoff, an opening match for the defending champions against a strong RCB unit in the charge of newly appointed captain Rajat Patidar for 2025, shall be hosted at Eden Gardens, KKR’s home ground, Kolkata.

The final of the IPL 2025 will also fit in Eden Gardens on May 25 and will thus offer the competition a fitting cliffhanger end one of the best-known cricketing venues in India.

Other Key Fixtures and Venues

Though the official timetable has yet to be announced, IPL teams have been notified of the dates for main matches. Sunrisers Hyderabad start their campaign at home on March 23, when they meet Rajasthan Royals. This encounter is sure to be an interesting one, with both teams seeking to start the season on a high note.

This year’s IPL will have matches played in 10 venues, some of which are new to the IPL calendar. For the first time, matches will be conducted in Guwahati and Dharamsala. Rajasthan Royals will face KKR and Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati on March 26 and March 30, respectively. Punjab Kings will also play some of their home games in Dharamsala, which should present the players with a new challenge and new conditions.

The Qualifier 1 and Eliminator will be staged in Hyderabad, while the Qualifier 2 and the Final will be conducted in Kolkata. Some of the other cities where IPL matches are being hosted this season are Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Mullanpur, Delhi, and Jaipur. These diverse locations will bring variety and enthusiasm to the tournament.

Uncertainty Over KKR’s Captaincy

Though RCB has already declared Rajat Patidar their new captain for IPL 2025, KKR is yet to declare their captain for the season. KKR had won the IPL title last season under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, but the franchise did not retain him. Punjab Kings purchased his services at the auction and declared him as their captain.

This has left KKR on the lookout for a new captain to lead the team this season, and fans are waiting with bated breath for the announcement. Similarly, Delhi Capitals has not made their captain announcement for IPL 2025 yet, adding another element of suspense to the season.

Schedule Announcement Likely Anytime Now

Though the IPL schedule is being looked forward to by fans, the announcement from the BCCI is still awaited. However, it is expected that the full schedule will be announced shortly. Following a special general meeting in Mumbai on January 12, BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla had previously stated that IPL 2025 will begin on March 23.

But according to reports now, the BCCI has pushed the beginning date forward to March 22, which is the actual commencement date of the season.
