The IPL Governing Council, acting under the auspices of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, oversees the annual domestic Twenty20 cricket tournament known as the Indian Premier League. It is the second highest-paid sporting league in the world and the most-viewed Twenty20 competition. Ten teams from ten locations in India presently participate in the IPL, which was founded in 2008. Each team plays twice during the IPL competition in a home-and-away, and double-round-robin style. According to the total points at the conclusion of the dual round-robin competition, the top 4 teams progress to the playoffs. This round features a matchup between the top two clubs. The losing team gets another opportunity to meet the criteria for the final game by playing the champion team of the Filtration match. This game is stated to as Qualifier two.
The winner of Contest 1 directly qualifies for the championship match, but the losing team gets another opportunity to qualify by playing the championship team in the Eliminator match; this game is referred to as Qualifier 2. The Qualifier 2 match that follows determines who progresses to the championship match. The IPL winner is the team that prevails in the championship game.
In total, thirteen clubs have participated in the IPL tournament’s past ten seasons. Five of these groups are no longer competing in the tournament. Due to a contract violation, BCCI canceled Kochi Tuskers Kerala’s franchise in 2011. Similarly to this, BCCI cut off the Deccan Chargers franchise in 2012 for breaking its promises. Pune Warriors India left the IPL in 2013 due to a dispute with the BCCI about franchise valuation. Following a betting controversy, the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were disqualified in 2015 and 2016. The Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were both permitted to return to the IPL tournament for the 2018 season, the BCCI confirmed in July 2017. The Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Mumbai Indians were among the eight teams competing in the competition that will compete in the 2020 season.
The Mumbai Indians have five championships. As of June 2022, the other teams that have won the tournament title are Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals, in addition to the former team, the Deccan Chargers, who have won two titles each. The Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders have each won four championships. On May 29, 2022, Gujarat Titans (GT) defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) to claim the Tata IPL 2022 championship.
