Both Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a disappointing end to their campaigns in IPL 2024, failing to secure playoff spots. While Mumbai struggled throughout the season, finishing last, CSK looked strong early on but fell just short of the playoffs. Both teams are determined to come back stronger in IPL 2025, and with player auctions ahead, there’s a chance for Chennai to pick up some talent from MI.

Here are three players released by Mumbai who could make a great fit in the CSK lineup:
Gerald Coetzee
Gerald Coetzee, known for his speed and ability to hit big shots down the order, is a perfect match for CSK. Currently a part of CSK’s sister team, the Texas Super Kings, the South African fast bowler has a style well-suited for Chennai’s spin-friendly Chepauk Stadium. His ability to bowl effectively in the middle overs as a pace enforcer would blend nicely with CSK’s existing spin options. Coetzee could even take the new ball when needed. The only challenge for Chennai might be structuring a batting core to support both him and Matheesha Pathirana.

Young and promising, Nehal Wadhera had limited chances in IPL 2024 but has shown his potential as a powerful left-handed middle-order batter. He brings versatility to the table, capable of handling both pace and spin. For Chennai, having a young Indian batter with these skills could be invaluable, especially as they look to build a solid core. Additionally, Wadhera’s part-time leg-spin could be useful in spin-friendly conditions like those in Chennai.
Naman Dhir
With Moeen Ali’s departure, CSK needs a replacement who can offer both batting and off-spin options in the middle order.
