Most Matches as an Umpire: ODI Cricket Records and Statistics
In 2009, 2010, and 2011, Dar won successive David Shepherd Achievement Awards. As a referee or umpire there are many individuals who made records.
Along with the players, the umpires play a significant role in determining the match’s outcome. Umpires are the only people in the game with authority to make decisions regarding any events during play. In cricket, there are three umpires: two works on the field, and the third works from the TV rooms to assist the other two. Dickie Bird, David Shepherd, Simon Taufel, Rudi Koertzen, Ian Gould, and Aleem Dar, amongst others, are commonly cited as some of the most excellent umpires in the history of the sport. And here is a list of the ODI cricket umpires who have worked the most matches.
1. Aleem Dar
Country: Pakistan
Matches: 229
ODI Career: 2000-Present
Aleem Dar is currently a first-class cricket umpire in addition to his previous career as a Pakistani first-class player. He has officiated an unprecedented number of international matches, making him the current record holder for most matches. Between 2009 and 2011, Dar received three David Shepherd Achievement Awards. As an umpire for 229 or more One-Day International matches, he has earned the right to claim the top spot on the list.
2. Rudolf Koertzen
Country: South Africa
Matches: 2009
ODI Career: 1992-2010
A South African referee, he worked the game from 1992 to 2010. He was a referee for 209 games, including numerous World Cup games. Every player had the utmost regard for the umpire because he officiated the game well. The game is better for his having been in it, and he will go down in history as a legendary figure. A new generation of South African umpires, inspired by him, is rising through the ranks.
3. Billy Bowden
Country: South Africa
Matches: 200
ODI Career: 1995-2016
Umpire Billy Bowden is currently active on the international cricket circuit. He is well-known for his “crooked finger of doom” out signal. Everyone likes him on and off the field because he is such an entertaining umpire. He is also quite fair. Billy is fresh off of officiating two WODIs in 2021. After officiating 308 international matches and 200 one-day internationals (ODIs), he moves to the third spot on the list.
4. Steve Bucknor
Country: West Indies
Matches: 181
ODI Career: 1989-2009
He was widely considered to be one of the most contentious umpires in the history of the sport of cricket. Even if the batters and the bowling team were perplexed by some of his decisions regarding how he handed out strikes, he was still accorded a great deal of respect because, the majority of the time, he was correct. It is rare to find umpires from the West Indies, but in recent years, a few young umpires from the West Indies have emerged, following in his footsteps.
5. Daryl Harper
Country: Australia
Matches: 174
ODI Career: 1994-2011
He was an Australian umpire who worked in 176 ODIs between 1994 and 2011. He was also an umpire for World Cup games, and he was liked and respected because he kept order on the field. He inspired the next generation of Australian umpires, and his services and contributions will not be forgotten. International cricket umpire Daryl Harper is no longer working. In 2011, he stopped being an umpire after Indian players unfairly criticized him after a test match between India and West Indies. Daryl is on the fifth list because he is one of the most disciplined cricket umpires.
