Pat Cummins of Australia bowled a five-wicket haul on Day 1 of the inaugural Ashes Test in Brisbane on Wednesday, joining a select group of bowlers who have done so as captains. Cummins is captaining Australia for the first time since Tim Paine stepped down from the position in November.
As Australia made a fantastic start to the Ashes series, knocking England out for 147 in the first innings, Cummins finished with statistics of 5/38 in 13.1 overs.
After dismissing England’s dangerous batsman Ben Stokes (5) cheaply in the morning, the paceman picked up four more victims after lunch.

Cummins led his team off the field with the Kookaburra ball held aloft, receiving a standing ovation from the Gabba fans following his first five-wicket haul against England.
Cummins became the first bowler to collect a five-wicket haul in his first Test as captain since Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan in 2019. Rashid had accomplished the feat against Bangladesh at Chattogram, taking five wickets in each innings in the Test.
Terrific start for the Aussies & the skipper @patcummins30 with his 5 fa. Eng are still in the game if they can knock over Australia for less than 285. Plenty in the pitch. Robinson the key to England taking early wickets @FoxCricket ! One feels Eng needs Aust 4 down tonight. 👍

Cummins joins a select group of elite bowler-captains who have taken a five-wicket haul, including Anil Kumble of India, Courtney Walsh of the West Indies, and Daniel Vettori of New Zealand, among others. Joe Root, the English captain, also had a five-wicket haul in a Test against India earlier this year.
Earlier in the day, England won the toss against Australia, but the hosts got off to a flying start due to Mitchell Starc’s first-ball dismissal of Rory Burns.
England were bowled out in the second session after failing to recover from the early setback.
