SA vs NZ: The South African cricket team won the 3-2 T20I series against New Zealand in Christchurch easily. This is Shukri Conrad’s first time to win a T20I series with the team while playing away from home.
In their first T20I match, South Africa set an impressive target by scoring 187/4 with a solid all-around bowling performance behind them.
South Africa’s emergence as a major star in the SA/NZ T20I series was the emergence of Connor Esterhuizen.
The young talent scored two consecutive half-centuries in the last two matches of the series. In the final match, he played a wonderful innings of 75 off just 33 balls.
Dominated the leg side with 52 runs
Hit 6 sixes, including several against spin
Scored 25 runs in the last two overs
Finished as the series’ top scorer with 200 runs
Esterhuizen’s impressive yet calculated performance was vital in helping South Africa achieve a winning score.
SA vs NZlStrong Partnerships Power South Africa
After inconsistent performances by the team earlier in the series, the South African batting lineup clicked at the right moment. The notable performances were:
- A 59-run second-wicket partnership, which included Rubin Hermann contributing 39 runs
- Multiple vital partnerships, three of which were the best of the series
Rubin Hermann looked promising but was dismissed by a stunning catch by Nick Kelly. Kelly performed a one-handed catch.
New Zealand Struggle in Chase
The decider match of the series between SA and NZ witnessed a disappointing run chase by the Kiwis, who were missing several of their players, including Tom Latham, due to injury.
Highest score of the match: Bevan Jacobs (36)
Only notable partnership of the match: Jimmy Neesham and Jacobs’ 52-run partnership
The Kiwis were at a disadvantage due to a lack of depth and consistency in their lineup
The six-member bowling attack of the home team, South Africa, helped them maintain a tight leash on the Kiwis and ensure they never got into a rhythm.
Gerald Coetzee Leads Bowling Attack
Gerald Coetzee continued to build on his impressive comeback as he led the bowling attack and helped the home team win the match:
- Bowling figures of Gerald Coetzee: 2/21 in 4 overs
- No boundary was conceded by Gerald Coetzee until the last ball of the over
- Important wickets taken by Gerald Coetzee in the death overs
- Gerald Coetzee ended the series as joint-leading wicket
Fielding Errors Add Drama
Despite the high-quality cricket, the match saw nine dropped catches, a record in a men’s T20I since 2018. Jason Smith also had a forgettable outing with a dropped catch, though he made amends later in the innings.
