Indian racing prodigy Sai Sanjay marked his international debut with a spectacular victory at the GT Cup Championship 300 finale, competing in the GTH class. This rising star from India displayed exceptional skills during the race weekend, securing two wins and a remarkable second-place finish in the second feature race. His outstanding performance earned him the coveted title of ‘Driver of the Day’ among a field of seasoned competitors.
Reflecting on his exhilarating experience, Sai Sanjay stated, “Competing in the UK for the first time in a GT4 car has been an exhilarating experience. I was elated to know that I would’ve been at the Top-5 of the British GT Championship with my time in Qualifying. Looking ahead, I’m planning to explore the car more at Silverstone as we had very limited track time prior to the race weekend.”
On the opening day, Sai’s teammate Davies secured pole position with an impressive time of 1:55:744. They went on to win the first Sprint race with a time of 25:39.518. In the first Feature race of the weekend, Sai took over after the pit stop and skillfully maintained the lead, finishing the race comfortably in 51 minutes and 45.513 seconds. The Racelab duo also set a commendable best lap time of 1:58.009.
On the second day, Sai, hailing from Salem, demonstrated his prowess in the #13 Racelab McLaren Artura. He dominated the competition by securing pole position with a rapid lap time of 1:55:472, leaving Hart’s Morpheus Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 in Group GTH trailing by 1.4 seconds.
Sai continued to impress by winning the 13-lap second Sprint race with a commanding lead of over 30 seconds. In the Feature (Pit-Stop) race, the team secured a respectable second place with a time of 51:31.167. Despite a minor incident, their performance was undeniably impressive.
Jon Lancaster, the Driver Coach, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “It is an unbelievable start to his GT career. Sai adapted well making his transition from single seaters to GT cars. He has been very professional, and his feedback about the car has been good. He’s been the fastest man all weekend and a very promising start indeed.”
Sai Sanjay, a 20-year-old Mechatronics student at VIT, Chennai, competed in the GTH category for the first time. The Indian National champion of 2022 in the Formula 2000 car received encouragement and support from mentor Aditya Patel, who played a pivotal role in Sai’s international debut in the UK. He was coached by Jon Lancaster, an experienced race driver and qualified instructor.
The GT Cup Championship is a premier sports car category in the UK, catering to drivers of all skill levels and featuring a diverse range of stunning vehicles. Sai Sanjay and Team Racelab are now gearing up for their upcoming test at Silverstone.
