The Hagley Oval in Christchurch has been locked in as the venue for the Super Smash knockout stages in both the men’s and women’s competitions this season. The elimination finals and the grand finals will be staged over the final three days of January, tying up New Zealand’s top domestic T20 competition in thrilling fashion.
Last year, Wellington’s Basin Reserve was fortunate enough to host the finals, but this year, Christchurch hosts, which represents a huge moment for Canterbury cricket.
Super Smash 2024-25: Schedule and Format
The new Super Smash 2024-25 season will commence on Boxing Day and will go on for 32 days with 64 games nationwide. The first matches will witness Northern Brave hosting Auckland men’s and women’s teams at Seddon Park in Hamilton.
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said that last season was a “watershed year” for the competition, with more than one million watching on TVNZ broadcasts and 7.3 million views online.
Competitive Edge and Player Development
Central Districts captain and Super Smash Men’s Player of the Year 2024, Tom Bruce noted the competitive edge of the tournament:
“With BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS sprinkled throughout the teams and younger players seeking greater honours, you have to continually improve your game. Playing similar teams repeatedly in a season compels you to keep getting better. The large crowds and television audiences provide this priceless preparation for international cricket.”
Hagley Oval: A Venue of Inspiration
Suzanne Pearce, Canterbury Cricket Trust Executive Manager, was looking forward to the Super Smash finals being played at Hagley Oval:
We think Hagley Oval is the greatest ground in New Zealand. Having the finals here is a massive vote of confidence in Christchurch and Canterbury as a whole. Having our dedicated fans and the incredible setting of the ground with the Southern Alps to one side and Port Hills to the other makes this competition special.”
She said promoting top-class cricket in Christchurch would encourage the next generation of players.
